How to Save Money at York Veterinary Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I lived downtown for many years and even after moving to the Upper East Side eight years ago, I continued traveling back to the Village to see my longtime vet because I trusted him so much. When he retired, I was anxious about finding someone new. Finding Dr. Herman has been such a relief. He’s taken wonderful care of my two cats, Ginger and Fred, and he’s always attentive, compassionate, and available. The entire staff — every tech and assistant — is warm, professional, and genuinely caring. I’m so grateful to have found this practice. Ginger, Fred, and I are in excellent hands.

Dr.Herman and his team eased all my concerns. They handled all the tests, paperwork, health certificates we needed in time. After a smooth if not a very long trip we arrived in Turkiye.Thank you so much. İ highly recommend York Veterinary Center. They really care and love your pets.

DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE! Firstly, Dr. Spencer Herman has the worst bedside manner of any vet I've ever come across. Secondly, he isn't a good vet: I had to put my sweet angel dog down and DR. HERMAN did not administer the first shot correctly, causing my dog to badly choke - it was torture. This was already the worst day of my life, and to have a vet not know what he is doing was just unimaginable. And what I couldn't mentally digest was that this man NEVER apologized and was passive aggressive towards me - not exactly what you want when you're going through emotional hell already. I never returned and have spread the word like wildfire. *TO NOTE: he even had his kind staff all walk out on him on the same day about 2 years ago, which to me just confirms how truly cold-hearted he is. Not sure who he's paying to write these other reviews, as I've met many others who have also had very negative and unprofessional experiences there. What's more, if you read his bad reviews, he does not own up to anything...instead, he lies, saying the reviewer must have the wrong office, or we don't have your records, et al. Really? Gaslighting people who paid you and trusted you? Have some respect.

I am so thankful to Dr. Herman and his wonderful staff! Special thanks to Owen who assisted Dr. Herman with Joy's nail trim -- a 2 person job as our cat is very skittish! You can sense Dr. Herman's kindness and compassion for animals immediately. This vet practice is a great blessing to all pet owners! Thank you, Dr. Herman, and thank you, Owen! When I was getting ready to adopt my cat and was asking around for recommendations for a vet in the neighborhood, York Veterinary Center and Dr. Herman came up time and time again. Juniper had her first visit just a couple of weeks after coming home and I knew that I had found our vet. (Since then, I've met multiple people in the waiting area who say they have since moved to Brooklyn but continue to bring their pets up to the UES!) Dr. Herman is incredibly gentle, thorough, and patient with her and somehow manages to get her sitting happily on his lap purring by the end of every visit. When I asked him once about his gentle approach, he shared how an experience early in his training really solidified his understanding that staying calm and patient with animals will lead to a better, more supportive, more successful vet experience, and I really see that in his practice. He has seen us through routine visits, a dental cleaning with multiple extractions needed, and a handful of "she's probably fine, but I just needed to bring her in...." visits where he took my concerns seriously and really explored the potential issue and how to address it. I've also seen a couple of the other vets at the practice over the years and each of them was equally as patient and thorough as Dr. Herman. For most cat owners, wrangling your cat to go to the vet is no small feat, even for the best kitties. But knowing that everyone in the office is so kind and will take such good care of your beloved pet makes such a difference in the whole experience. I truly can't recommend them enough to anyone looking for a vet!
