How to Save Money at Heart of Harlem Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We are new to Heart of Harlem and have two new feline family members who will be calling it their home vet clinic based on the superb care one of them recently received. The staff are thorough, caring, and compassionate beyond anything we've experienced in almost two decades of being pet parents. Dr. Sola and the team showed extreme levels of empathy and were diligent in helping identify the route of his unusual condition. Not only were they kind and thorough in person but we even received multiple calls to check in on our little guy the day after while I was monitoring him from home. At least three different people including Dr. Sola called in a period of maybe 6-8 hours to be sure they understood his condition. Thanks to quick and concerned folks at Heart of Harlem, and the folks at the Animal Medical Center, our buddy is home and in great health. The folks at Heart of Harlem made the difference for our family by acting fast and with deep respect for him and the family.

It was Sadie first time at this vet, the staff was welcoming and so kind to her. They were very informative and knew what they were doing, which is very important when it comes to my baby Sadie. I will definitely be making this her main vet.

Told me my cat needed to be fixed even though he had already been fixed. They never followed up after. They also do a weird performative thing where they respond to bad reviews as if it was all a fluke misunderstanding but its utter bs. Chain vets are often owned by private equity. They want money more than anything. Be wary because in my 36 years and 3 dogs and 4 cats ive had in my life in the city and the burbs of nyc this was the worst vet experience by far. Not to mention the location is crazy inaccessible. Theres a huge steep flight of stairs thats hard to get up and down.

I went to take my 2.5 year old dog Major there on Saturday for routine bloodwork. My appt was at 3:40pm, and I was out by 5pm. Everyone was super friendly, sweet and professional. Everyone loved on Major and was soo comforting. It was a great visit, and I am happy to have a great vet in my neighborhood.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Heart of Harlem Veterinary Clinic! From the moment I walked in with my kitty Moo-Moo, I felt right at home. The entire staff is kind, compassionate, and extremely knowledgeable, ensuring that both pets and their owners feel comfortable and well cared for. The service here is absolutely magnificent—they take the time to explain everything, answer any questions, and handle each visit with patience and professionalism. Even after getting a vaccine, Moo-Moo always left happy, thanks to the little treats they gave him! It’s clear that everyone at this clinic genuinely loves what they do, and that warmth translates into the care they provide. If you’re looking for a vet that truly prioritizes the well-being of your furry family member, I highly recommend Heart of Harlem Veterinary Clinic. Thank you for always taking such great care of Moo-Moo! 🐾❤️
