How to Save Money at Franklin Square Veterinary

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Amazing vet! I am a first time cat mom and the vet and people who work there answered all of my questions, were super patient and friendly, and took amazing care of the kittens. The vet took his time to explain everything and was even standing outside in the hot sun but did not rush and answered all of our questions. They care about your pet here, even fondly using their names, and take care with them when handling. I am so happy I found such an amazing vet to trust and take care of my babies!

I refuse to go to any other vet but them. My family has been using them since 2001. I moved to Queens, near the city and tried to find closer vets and failed. I don't care if I have to travel by 3 trains and 2 buses to get there. They are worth it. Dr. DeLacamera is amazing. She KNOWS my cats. She doesn't just treat them, she knows what makes each of them comfortable and what upsets them. I find that very important. Dr Durante was the first vet we had there and he always treats them with care. He's operated on most of our pets (fixing, dental, ect) and made sure they were well taken care of. If he feels that surgery is too risky for your pet, he will refuse. He puts their safety first. Dr. Christiansen has helped us through one of the most difficult process of putting down a pet with grace and understanding. She keeps an eye on the others to make sure what happened to Bella doesn't happen with our other pets. Cancer snuck up on us and by the time we got her to Dr. Christiansen, it was too late. Cats like to hide their illnesses from us. They often don't show signs til the very end. But we've learned a lot from her about this and early detection. Everyone is super nice and caring. The vet techs are knowledgeable and will give advise based on what the vet said. And if they are not sure about something, they will go out of their way and ask the vet for you. Their prices are very reasonable and they only do or give you things that you need. For example, we wanted a shot for our dog for her upper respiratory infection. They told us it would do nothing for her and gave us the pill antibiotics instead. Other vets would have done it and made an easy $100 bucks off of us. They're honest, respectful and truly care about our pets. I will always go to them and recommend their services. Please enjoy my Taco Kitty, Draco. Photo taken at the vet.

So today I woke up to my cat being very sick and I called a different veterinary office and was told to wait till tomorrow for a appointment. I then Called Franklin vet and After I explained the symptoms of my cat, George said to bring in my cat right away. He called Dr Durante who made time for me immediately. After seeing my cat, I had a difficult decision to make either put him down or have a large expense. I was very upset and needed some time to talk to my family and Marie was amazing, she let me take my time and was very emphatic to my situation. She also gave me options for whichever way I decided. The staff there truly care and are very knowledgeable. I will now be bringing all my pets to them.

I can not recommend this place enough! We were very hesitant to bring our 16 year old Malti- poo in for a visit after he started circling and not sleeping well. The entire staff was so supportive: the receptionist, the nurse and Dr. Christiansen. We are definitely helicopter parents to our little boy Cosmo and they were patient with us, allowed us to ask all the questions we had and provided so many holistic and practical remedies to help support our dog during these elder years. We are so grateful!

First and last time at this establishment. The welcome staff is very nice but Dr. Duranti was extremely unprofessional, annoyed by my dog's nervousness and tried to manhandle him instead of putting him at ease. I've never dealt with a doctor so inconvenienced and rude. He refused to treat him. Will never return and do not recommend to anyone.
