How to Save Money at Taconic Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my dog there last week because she had been limping for a few days. We were brought straight into a room when we arrived, and the appointment ran right on time. Dr. Wallace and everyone on staff was helpful and kind. Dr. Wallace listened to all my concerns and presented me with a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment plan (including a backup plan!) Not even five days later, my dog is back to her normal self! Gives me such peace of mind to have smart and caring veterinarians in our area. 10/10 would recommend.

Besides the receptionist, who are always great. The vets in this office only care about money and nothing else. Had an appointment for 5:20pm and didn’t see anyone for almost two hours. My dog is not eating and has diarrhea. They didn’t not tell me what the issue was but tried to prescribe three medications, even though they only initially told me about 1. They spent the entire time trying to get me to agree to getting surgery for my dog. When I asked for a specific antibiotic, they refused to give it to me, even though they agreed it made sense. Once, I refused to take the medications and they could see I was visibly upset, the doctor disappeared and I never saw her again. Absolutely, terrible experience!

Dr. Wallace is fantastic! She is a caring and thorough, highly skilled surgeon who explained all in a clear precise manner. The support staff is friendly and professional. The follow up after surgery was excellent. I’m pleased the the Animal Welfare League suggested this hospital. The hours are extended. 7:30-7/7 days a week.

I brought my dog here because she was acting unusual, and turns out she had eaten a full bowl of another dog’s bowl leading to bloat. However, she has a chronic stress-induced disease (pancreatitis) as well. I admitted her for the night and called every few hours to check on her, as I know that vet visits trigger her disease. They told me every time she was “sleeping peacefully”. Finally, she was able to pass some of the food, and I was excited to pick her up… 24 hours later. I was told no, they would not be releasing her. I explained, that if she was successfully moving things through her system, the next goal was not to exacerbate her other illness. They did not listen. I made the decision to remove her “against medical advice” and when i took her home she was paralyzed. I am not exaggerating. She couldn’t stand, and was borderline catatonic from shock and stress. I stayed up most of the night for several days wondering if this was our new reality before she started to act like normal. But I have truly never seen her like that before or since. She has had plenty of teeth cleanings, ultrasounds, etc. as she is a senior dog, but no other vet has ever done the damage that this vet did to her that night. Alternatively, I can not recommend Flannery (in Newburg) enough, which might be more of a drive, but they actually believe that you know your pet when you talk to them, and that’s worth more than anything.

Lack of knowledge and care is an understatement. This place would have let my puppy die if I didn’t take matters elsewhere. A simple case of worms but the Vet said there was “no way” it could be this and refused to give my PUPPY a dewormer, which is perfectly safe to do even if that wasn’t the case but she refused and tried to then wait 3 days for results are you kidding?? Results should not take that long in the meantime refuse treatment for a possible case resulting in the near death of my dog. Simple solution could have ended very differently if I did not go against her “medical advice” which was to not give my dog a dewormer. Went to the store got a dewormer 4 hours later my pup was fine, why not start with that in the first place if that was a suspicion??? Yea sure go here if you want a dead dog because of refusal of treatment so they can push you to pay thousands to admit the dog to their animal hospital. Rip off, lack of care and accountability. Insanity.
