How to Save Money at VCA Cazenovia Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Flower was treated well by the vet and her aides. Flower said it was a "meow" experience.

I have not had a great time with this Vet Clinic, at all! I thought this place was going to be amazing and the vet is knowledgeable, but the administration of this place is completely horrific. First, they lost an appointment. Then they send me letters saying my puppy is past due on vaccinations. I have to call and explain to them I have all of the paperwork from them saying he is fine. Then I go to get another round of shots and I pay and go on my merry way. They ended up not giving me the paperwork for his rabies shot. I needed to get him groomed and needed proof he had been vaccinated. When I go through my paperwork, I don't have it. So I call and get them to make me a copy of his vaccinations records. They were great about this. But now I get an invoice in the mail saying I have not paid for something. I call and they explain that someone "forgot" to put some vaccinations in the system and created an invoice 2 weeks later. How am I supposed to trust that he has received all of his shots?? It makes me sad that I have to figure out all the administrative stuff and let them know about it and receive random bills in the mail. The vets are great, but like I said, the administration is terrible, hints the 2 stars rather than 1.

They’re great to take your money for double the cost on any prescriptions but if you have an animal with a scrape you need looked at who’s been going for 8 years you’re told we can’t see you for 2weeks. I’m beyond disgusted I’ve been bringing my dogs here for years and my parents did before me probably over 30 years here. I wouldn’t recommend them to take care of anything but emptying your wallet when it’s convenient for them.

Wonderful staff and Vet(s). Have taken my pets for many years and they have gone beyond my expectations in how they care for every animal. I know the pandemic has been hard on all of us. I hope to see them back on January 30th! Thank you for all you do!

The vets at Cazenovia Animal Hospital have taken care of our dogs and cats for 20 years. They were always like family and in emergency situations, they would always find a way to work us in. Then VCA took over the practice and suddenly it was like managed healthcare for humans. The doctors are overworked, the prices went up, and getting an appointment took months. Yes, the pandemic contributed, but it seems suspicious that the two vets who have been there since before we arrived both retired at the same time leaving a much less experienced doctor to work all by herself. My eighteen year-old cat went in for a routine blood draw to check her T4, and became sick the next day. I called to get her seen and was told that the one vet was double-booked all day. I told the receptionist how very sick she was and that it looked terminal. How long does it take to to end her suffering or give me a bag of Ringer's lactate and a needle to ease her passing? I am changing to a non-VCA clinic before any of my other animals needs treatment. I will be delivering my cat's body tomorrow for cremation. This would not have happened in the past.
