How to Save Money at URvet Care Astoria (URvet Care Midtown Medical Center Open 24/7)

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very clean office. We came as a walk in new visit and they had a vet tech come out and ask us about our visit. They saw to us quickly and were very professional. We knew we were in good hands and paws.

I had the best experience at URvet! I had to take my 12 year old Pug in for a bad cough. The front desk was very welcoming and accommodating. The Vet was very knowledgeable and gave my baby a full physical exam and explained everything thoroughly. The Vet tech, Ali was the sweetest!! My pug definitely was flirting with her. haha She was super knowledgeable and answered every single one of my questions and concerns. She is just AMAZING. Everyone here made me feel very comfortable and took very good care of my big baby. 10/10 experience and i will definitely be coming back! Thank you URvet!

Based on my experience, I will not be returning, and I recommend others carefully consider their options. I brought my pet to this clinic hoping for quality care (and sister clinic in Midtown) but, unfortunately, my experience did not meet expectations. After a procedure, complications arose that required me to seek a second opinion at another, different clinic. The new veterinarian identified issues that needed correction, and my pet is now receiving appropriate care. While I can’t share all the details at this time (and there are way more), I encourage pet owners to thoroughly research their options and ask detailed questions before proceeding with treatment. Please take my experience into account, and if the clinic responds to this review, as they often do, I encourage you to reflect carefully and keep my words in mind. I have nothing to gain from sharing my experience other than helping fellow pet owners make informed decisions, and I sincerely wish you and your pet the best.

We just moved to Astoria and have been looking for a primary vet for our 2 cats and a puppy. The team at URvet was great in every way. Our 9 year old cat had to get a blood test to monitor his thyroid, what was traumatic and painful at his previous vet, was the complete opposite here. Our cat was chilled and relaxed through out the whole process. Both technicians were wonderful, patient, and knowledgeable about their tasks: Ali and Courtney. The receptionist Sarranda was friendly, efficient, and kind. And Dr. Andrea Shliselberg was amazing, our cat was completely relaxed with her handling him, she listened to us attentively, and gave good advise in treating our cat's chronic respiratory inflammation that he was born with. We dreaded having to take him back to the vet and it was a complete surprise that visit to the vet doesn't need to be stressful. Thank you URvet!

I am usually one who leaves positive reviews… this place was predatory- quoted one price on the phone for lung xray (3views, which is standard)… and told us a X-ray was 3x that much once we were in the office. “Oh well we need to administer a paralytic, which will make him sick so we need to give an antiemetic… so it’s $1300 just for the xray.” “Can we try without all that?” “No, the vet won’t do it” Charged us for an emergency visit when we had an appointment. Suggested credit cards with 28% interest for pet care… no thanks. Same tests were $800 elsewhere vs $1600- do your research! They take advantage of people’s emotions when it comes to pets, though thankfully there are places that don’t. We felt pushed into making a snap decision, which is always a red flag. Our orange boy is doing well, thankfully!
