How to Save Money at South Shores Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We can not say enough about the staff at South Shores. We have been going to them for years, for our older dogs. But recently, our youngest dog, Bentley had serious medical issues that meant we spent a lot of time with this team and the people there. Our dogs love the vet. And Bentley loved them most of all. And I think they loved him just as much. We probably saw every single doctor and vet tech there and we were given the best care, honesty, compassion..all steps were taken to save our boy. The front desk staff are the best people who love our dogs, especially our Bentley and dealing with them during our hardest times and lowest points in our lives. They were accommodating, caring and a lot of fun on top of that. When we had to make the difficult decision to put Bentley to sleep, they were so incredible. They were kind and compassionate from the phone call to the end. I saw the tears in their eyes, too and being with them while we said goodbye to our boy made a horrible process easier. Our boy was a favorite so they even gave him a delicious special donut to send him on his next journey. They made us feel comfortable and loved during a very dark time. We will be forever grateful for this team and they will always be our vet! Thank you to everyone there for loving our boy so much and for loving our other dogs. The feeling is very mutual.

I took my pup in without knowing what was wrong, but he would randomly squeal like he was in pain a few times a day over the weekend with no clear indication of what was bothering him. Dr. Suzuki is absolutely amazing! She was very compassionate and gentle with my baby - he's a sweet but anxious boy- but also very thorough. She looked into every single concern I had and gave me so much information to help me look out for any signs moving forward. I also appreciate that this isn't one of those places trying to rack up the bill. There was no pushing for unnecessary scans or x-rays since there weren't necessary signs to need them, which I was thinking could happen. I can tell they really love animals here. Everyone, even at the front desk, was super sweet and welcoming and prioritized my baby's comfort above all, just as much as they prioritized helping him. I am so glad I came here. I read reviews for multiple animal hospitals on this side of town and this one fit the bill: I can see why! Bring your dog here because they will take amazing care of you and not make you feel rushed or like an inconvenience. They're very attentive and caring and extremely thorough. 10/10 would recommend; A+++

Just moved here and was looking for a new vet for my bengal/savannah cats. I read the reviews and decided to come here. Dr. Suzuki was wonderful and my cat was comfortable with her right away. This is the least stressed my cat has ever been in a vets office. All of the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The office is nice, clean, and comfortable. Their prices are way better than my last vet and they run specials. I’m glad I found a great place to take my cats that they actually enjoy going to. Definitely recommend.

They listen, they are compassionate. The new office space is so open. I have 2 dogs over 60 lbs and I did not feel like we were cramped in the exam room. They have been very accommodating to my schedule to get the dogs in for annual shots and blood work.

The staff was exceptionally caring and sweet with our pets. The Veterinary staff are great and my pets are very well cared for. They also have grooming and boarding onsite too.
