How to Save Money at Las Vegas Veterinary Specialty Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Gietzen took amazing care of my baby and addressed all of my concerns in a timely manner. My dog was having seizures and then all of a sudden he took a 360 turn and was acting lethargic. They got him in for a MRI and Spinal tap ASAP. After a day filled with anxiety they still answered all of my questions (I had a long list) and made sure we were all on the same page regarding medications, aftercare, and risks. I really appreciate everyone's compassion and for taking care of Phin. It is the worst feeling in the world to leave your baby somewhere where you know they are scared and confused. I would definitely recommend this place especially because for specialty care we don't have many options in Las Vegas! Special shout out to Jen, Aubrey, and Fiore. You guys make a difference when you lead with kindness and it shows!!!! Thank you!!! P.s. the rooms are pretty clean and you typically don't have to wait that long!

The care and concern from Dr Kelly with my girl (Dot), unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Dot passed in Jan 2020, and I should have reviewed long ago. But Dr Kelly, incredible person and spirit and it was beyond amazing to watch her work and connect with my dog.

I had to drive my daughter and her injured St Bernard to this establishment after the St Bernard was hit by a motor vehicle. While the outcome was tragic, from first call to euthanasia, they were caring, informative and professional. There aren’t words to express my gratitude in their supportive response to this tragedy. I personally thank all of them & highly recommend their services.

After over a year of treatment for a rare and aggressive cancer, we lost our boy. The flowers pictured were sent by his doctor at LVVSC and much appreciated. I am forever grateful for the added time we had for more adventures and love. We were able to continue our rv travels and you can see my boy enjoying a few days at Telephone Cove. The treatment was not cheap but in breaking down the charges, everything was quite fair and even cheaper than other options. The doctors were thorough and communicated well...even on weekends and evenings. I am both heartbroken and appreciative of the extra time we had together.

My feelings are mixed. I brought my dog in the day we found out he had lymphoma and the ER doctor lacked compassion and it made me skeptical on whether I could trust them. I admitted him, hoping I could save him, and they did. I got a few more weeks with him, but looking back I feel like there is so much I would have done different. We were racing time and didn't have the chance to get a second opinion. My dog passed away less than a month after his first visit. I was told on his last txt that there was a 50/50 chance they would give him type correct type of chemo, and I guess it was the wrong one. I wish they would have helped make him more comfortable during chemo, maybe helped me with the right kind of meds. I was always calling to tell them what they gave me wasn't working and they just told me to keep giving him the same stuff. I follow a group online that seems to have better support and treatment. I'm not sure if would have saved my dog, but I wish he'd of gotten top quality care. This vet's office will treat your animal, but with mediocre care and at a high price. The UMC for animals. I hope I never have to go back.
