How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Update: they were able to fix the payment issues and because of the business took several hours to input the appointment information. The wellness visit was completed, it just took 2 hours and we didnt get to talk to the vet. Extremely frustrated. I was told on the phone that I was scheduled for an appointment for my 2 cats on 11/20/25 and that the free wellness exam would be for both of my cats since they were both new patients. When I arrived at the clinic, I looked at the coupon and it said only for 1 cat. There was a miscommunication, that's fine, I was happy to pay still. We sat at the vet for 2 full hours and barely received any communication. Over the course of 1.25hrs, my cats received a couple annual vaccines and we waited 45min for the vet to return. Throughout that 45min, we asked if we could pay the bill and receive a followup call because it had already been so long. They said they couldn't let us pay and leave until the doctor came out. We received no information about why things were taking so long until we asked several times. They said for the wait, they'd allow my coupon to be used for both cats, but would need to have me pay then be refunded the other visit in a week. I was understanding about that. We never saw the doctor. They ended up allowing us to pay and leave after 2 hours of waiting. The true straw that broke the camels back was that when I looked at the paperwork, the only things completed at the visit were their vaccines. There were no vitals. No weight. It says that my sterilized 9 year-old cat is intact. I tried really hard to give the benefit of the doubt, but I nearly missed another appointment I needed to go to because the care took so long, then I came to find out that no wellness visit appeared to have been completed. I really hope this can be remedied. Will update.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I can’t say enough about the wonderful care my little Frenchie, Louie H., receives at Banfield under Dr. McTear and her amazing team! From the moment we walk in, I know Louie is in the best hands. They truly listen to my concerns, make scheduling appointments easy, and always give us the time and attention we need. Dr. McTear is knowledgeable, patient, and takes the time to explain everything so I feel confident about Louie’s care. It’s such a relief to have a veterinary team that treats Louie like family. We are so lucky to have them as part of Louie’s healthcare team! 🐾❤️

So, I have visited this location on multiple occasions and I initially thought the service was pretty decent. However, today I made an online appt for my dog who is showing signs of either, conjunctivitis or allergies, but he was pretty miserable looking when I went home for lunch. Since I am a first responder, I arranged for family to pick him up(from across town) and take him in for his 4:30 appt. I get a call shortly after telling me that he could not be seen because they have to start preparing to close and and start their cleaning at 5pm. Well, online the office hours showed Monday thru Wed open until 7pm and the rest of the days closing at 6pm. I was confused why it was a hardship to see him for a few minutes to give a prescription. We weren't coming in for surgery, it's pink eye! The girl who answered the phone was very dismissive and tried to hurry me along. I spoke to another gentlemen at a different location who was willing to see him, but we would not make it there in time. What a disappointment! I guess cleaning the floors take priority over treating the patient! I have patronized this location, but not anymore. Bad business.

This is not my regular veterinarian but it was open and had appointments available. I made an appointment and wasn't sure if my dogs allergic reaction was an emergency or not. As I was pulling into the parking lot, just mins before my appointment, I get a phone call from a young man who very unprofessional and sounded like he was in Junior High, with uh and yeah every other word. He told me all the appointments were canceled for the rest of the afternoon due to an emergency. I told him maybe my dog was also an emergency and he said the doctor had to leave for the day. So they have one vet, who probably wanted to leave early on Sunday afternoon and couldnt accommodate us when I was already there. There was no empathy, no duty of care, and no attempt to find another Banfield location to take me. His response was then sarcastic and condescending that I could always call other vets. There's also literally a vet emergency clinic across the street, but thank you, I found it myself upon your suggestion. As I was speaking to that clinic trying to talk to a ER Vet, I recieved 2 more incessant phone calls from Banfield that I couldn't answer, and was a different person calling to tell me they had to cancel my 2pm appointment at 1:57p. I guess this office doesn't communicate and cancels appointments last minute in your time of need. I wouldn't take any animals to a place with such rude, unprofessional, and uncaring employees.

My dog and I had such a great experience visiting Banfield in Whitney on Stephanie! I could swear that my pup, who normally gets upset for the rest of the day after a doctor's visit, is happily walking around saying: "They treated me like a patient and not like a customer!" Dr. McTear was so kind and patient, answering my every question and providing great info on getting our girl back on track with a healthier diet and better dental hygiene. Dr. McTear is so sweet and caring, I love her already. Theresa was super helpful and patient, as well, and provided us with such a cute goody bag as we were leaving. I'm so relieved to know that our love has a great team to keep her healthy. There is plenty of parking, and this Banfield has their own entry from the parking lot, with a nice-sized waiting area.
