How to Save Money at Valley Veterinary Pet Lodge and Salon

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This clinic refused emergency care for my dog with a breathing issue at 3 am! Trust me, I would have waited if I could have, thus the emergency. The next closest clinics are in Albuquerque. While I understand the need to limit emergency service, they spoke to me on the phone and refused service to an animal with breathing issues. I do not live in the state (so I am not an established client) and there are no emergency services. I would have gladly paid their $309 emergency exam fee at time of arrival- but they HUNG up on me! - editing to add my dog was diagnosed with aspiration preneumonia in Albuquerque, NM when he was seen at 7:40 am. It's pretty disappointing that these people declined services to an animal in need.

The customer service is ok and the services rendered were completed satisfactorily BUT they will lie about what things cost and add more on to your bill at the end. I was given a quote that apparently didn't include a basic exam which was $120!! On top of an already $280 bill. So I didn't expect to spend $400!! On an exam of my mother dog and care for her puppies. This was my second visit, I had a similar experience the first time. On my first visit, I spent almost $300 for an exam and a rabies shot while being made to feel bad for not wanting to spend even more on over priced and unnecessary tests on an obviously healthy dog who was only there for a rabies vaccination. Even though the customer service isn't bad the services offered are grossly over priced and I was lied to in order to get my business. We have several animals and will be needing regular vet care in the near future but our family will not be returning to this establishment.

We started coming here when my dog was bleeding from his prostate and our other vet suggested it was only a scratch. It turns out it's cancer. The doctors here at Valley Vet have given us so much extra time with our boy, and when it is time to say goodbye they have a candle out front to light so anyone in the waiting room is quiet and respectful. When she broke the news to us the doctor had tears and just knowing she loves our animals as much as we do means everything. All the techs and doctors are wonderful, definitely bring your pets here.

Our 10 year old elderly but healthy teacup dog (based on recent visit and lab work) died 4 days after teeth cleaning and extraction of multiple teeth. During initial exam, the veterinarian did not look at teeth before procedure. During the procedure, we received a call stating what was found was worse than expected and informing us the procedure would cost more. Options, risks and benefits not explained. Anti-inflammatory pain medication known to cause bleeding and especially in elderly animals prescribed post procedure. Started vomiting and intestinal bleeding on day 4 - contacted office immediately and informed not on call and would need to seek help elsewhere. Our dog died hours later. Notified office of death, less than helpful receptionist and have yet to receive a return call from the veterinarian. All this for a cost 3-4 times more than any other veterinarian in this area would charge.

I was impressed with the entire experience. I had arrived early for my appointment. I was surprised to find no one waiting in the waiting room. I did not have to wait too long either. My dogs and kitten received their vaccines and prescriptions quickly. I was able to schedule a few more appointments for my kitten. The tech and veterinarian answered all my questions. My only complaint was the price. It was expensive for their annual check ups, vaccines and heart guard.
