How to Save Money at Southwest Veterinary Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This office has been outstanding every experience I have had with them. I personally have had experiences with a lot of the vets here in Albuquerque due to my career in working with animals over the years and no one else compares. I am impressed with their team every single time. My 3 dogs and cat have seen all of the different doctors here over the years and are so well taken care of each time. The front office team and techs have been so wonderful with my babies. (Especially Raquel who handled my Belgian Malinois like a pro when restraining her, it hasn’t always been the easiest in the past). I searched for a good vet to take my animals to when I moved here over 6 years ago and this place has not disappointed. The prices are so fair especially considering I know pricing has to go up to keep up the economy. My cat also got really sick a couple years back and his bladder was blocked when I was out of town. They took him in as an emergency since he was already one of their patients and kept him for a few days until we got back into town. (Not to mention for a very small fraction of the price that a different vets office was wanting for all of his care). I could go on and on, but I am so grateful for everything y’all have done. Thank you Southwest Vet from the bottom of my heart. My animals are my babies and there’s no where else I would take them.

Our 6 month old corgi loved her first visit here (as much as any puppy can love going to the vet's office!) 😁 Great, friendly staff, and all the Dr's we've had the pleasure of caring for our pups have been fantastic. Shout out to Dr. Abbott & Dr. Levenson, we love them both. ❤️ There are several vet's offices closer to us, but it's worth the drive taking our fur kids here. 😀

Very cozy environment. Everyone on staff was excellent and welcoming. I had been looking for an exotic pet vet, and this is definitely the place to go. Full of knowledge and expertise. My bearded dragon was in good hands. Thank you!

This place was okay. I thought the front staff was inexperienced. My first time there was decent but I saw them being a little rude to certain customers. Then I had made an appointment for 3:30 had to wait till almost 4:30 to be seen even though the board had stated all doctors were on time. This also happened the 2nd appointment I had. My turtle got seen twice and was treated and the plan was set for some rounds of shots. The front desk will not schedule your follow up appointments, you have to remind them yourself. After making my own follow up since they forgot my turtle needed 3 rounds of shots not two. They forgot to confirm my final appointment then I went to go in for that final appointment and they stated I didn’t have an appointment but we did and it was my turtles final round of shots that the doctor stated she needed every 7 days but they couldn’t get me in so I finished the rest of the treatment at a different location. Pros: my turtle got better due to treatment, explaining everything and provided resources Cons: front staff and back staff seem disconnected , front staff won’t schedule follow ups unless you specifically ask, appointment times are usually 30-45 min off
