How to Save Money at Roadrunner Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had to make the heart breaking decision of putting down my Trixie “German Shepard” of 7 1/2 years after battling cancer for countless months. The entire staff here was extremely compassionate during my entire visit, giving me as much time as needed and made the entire process a little easier. I’ll be forever grateful for not having me sit in the waiting room and being sent to a private area immediately.

I would give this place 100 stars if I could! Their caring, compassion and professionalism go above and beyond! I've found myself at Roadrunner Veterinary 3 times in the last year, with 3 different pets, and each visit was met with beautiful, compassionate staff who always made me feel like my feelings mattered, as they cared for my furry friends with great kindness and respect. With my latest visit to Roadrunner Veterinary, I took my young cat Atlas in because he had become suddenly very ill. My little fur baby ended up needing to be euthanized. The entire staff was so caring and supportive with this unexpected turn of events. Both of the gals at the front desk were wonderful, one of whom was great in giving me some very welcome and much needed hugs! I felt so alone and those warm hugs were just what I needed to help get me through that difficult time. I was so blessed to have Dr. Amanda Rouse caring for Atlas that day. She really has a heart full of love and kindness. Everything she did with Atlas was done with love and caring, and the way she and talked with me and explained the situation to me, I could feel she always wanted what was best for Atlas. And she cared about what I was going through which really showed her spirit of true love and genuine kindness. The room they put us in so I could spend some final minutes holding and loving Atlas was warm and comfortable. The time I was given to hold and love Atlas and say goodbye was very peaceful. I was so grateful to be able to hold him, and rest with him, and he was able to lay on my chest and relax like he did at home. The whole euthanasia process was so peaceful. I am so glad that Dr. Rouse was the one who was caring for my little Atlas at the end of his very short life. Thank you so much Dr. Rouse and the rest of the Roadrunner Veterinary staff for helping Atlas and myself find some peace, and for helping to make that very difficult day bearable.

Unfortunately, I had to put my best friend and dog soul mate down. He was old and I woke up on a Saturday and he started breathing weird and I knew it was time. I called Petroglyph, but they weren’t taking anymore walk ins and they referred me here. I appreciated how straightforward the vet was with me and how fast they were. They told me he wa dying and so I had to put him down. When I had to put my Doberman down in Tucson due to Valley Fever, it was like pulling teeth asking them if it was worth it to keep her alive, and when I did put her down it was just in one of the rooms. Roadrunner has a nice room with a couch to put the animals down in. I truly appreciated this. They also sedated him since he was in pain so I could say goodbye and didn’t charge for that. I thought the employees were very kind and sympathetic. I truly appreciate it, because this was one of the hardest things I had to do. I got him a nice urn, paw prints, and some of his fur. They also sent us a card later with their condolences. Thank you! Rest in peace Axl Rose!

This clinic is worth more than 5 stars. The staff are kind, understanding, patient, and empathetic. They treat every person and their patients with respect and love — it shows. The clinic itself is warm and inviting even without the energy of the staff who certainly create a vibe that makes everyone feel comfortable and taken care of. When we experience emergencies with our furbabies, having people to trust with their care is HUGE. I’ve never once second-guessed the expertise of the incredible people who treated Romeo (my best friend) as though he was their own dog. Even though he’s a little cranky and definitely reactive, they showed him the same love that they showed the adorable patients who were much more… friendly. Lol! Romeo’s behavior can be a huge red flag for a lot of people, and I’ve been questioned before about whether or not I’m trying to help him make progress — they never once judged me and instead celebrated me for rescuing him. It meant the world to me. Maybe Romeo will stop by for a visit when he can behave like the nice young man I know he is capable of being… lol! Thank you for saving Romeo. He might be a handful, but he’s my handful and life without him wouldn’t be the same. 🩷 Romeo continues to show me that everyone, even those of us with some serious issues (myself included), are deserving of love. He is a staple for me when it comes to my job — the kids who struggle with completing their work will magically finish their worksheets when they show up on Monday to find a photo of Romeo sitting at their desk with a sign that says, ‘Math is ruff but you can do it!’ So aside from the gratitude I feel as his mama, you have kept smiles on the faces of the kids I get the pleasure of working with. 🩷 Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. **PS: Romeo’s name is funny because he isn’t really a lover-boy… unless it’s me. But when I finally caught him, I noticed he had a heart-shaped spot on his hip. (Last pic!)

I left a review for a different emergency vet (Thrive) earlier today. The difference between these two places was night and day. My dog was having an allergic reaction this weekend where my regular vet isn't open. Our experience at Thrive had us very discouraged because of the way they treated our dog. He is very excitable and can be perceived as aggressive (he is a pit bull) which the people at Thrive immediately did. We explained our situation to the folks at this new Roadrunner location and they very much accommodated us. They were empathic as people who work with animals should be. I really appreciate their understanding and they know how to treat people. My dog warmed up to them quickly and by the time we were done the muzzle was off and we were taken care of. Everybody was great, I highly recommend them. Anytime I have an emergency I will now take my pet there. Thank God, there aren't very many options for 24 hour very care in Albuquerque. I hope they stick around.
