How to Save Money at Westwood Regional Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very unhappy for the first time in 3 years here! Took our dog to have some bumps removed. They suggest an antibiotic which they wound up not having! We were there 8/2 and going on a week later! I ordered the antibiotic 8/2 & it will not arrive until Thursday! Is it even worth it anymore??? We were also advised of an eye ulcer. We have been monitoring pup's eye since last week. Noticing it has beem a little bit squintier and called 2 days ago and yesterday leaving messages. Finally called today and got someone who was awaiting the Dr's arrival to ask about a prescription. Waited all day for a call back, nothing! I finally called back only to have someone tell me they are out of the eye drop medicine too & that I could order online; what to wait another week for another prescription NOT TO COME IN TIME?? What good does that do for my dog today??? What happened to that place in 3 years and why is the customer service going down hill?

I didn't want to have to write this review but I am so disappointed in the care that my dog received and the attitude that I have received from this place. I brought my dog in for GI issues. An examination was performed and tests were run to rule out various issues. I specifically asked them to check him for a bacteria that caused him to have an infection when he was a baby, at which time we were advised that the sickness could come back at some point. Dr. McConnell, the vet at Westwood refused to run the test. When everything came back clean I was told he had a bout of Colitis and sent home with medication. After four days on the medication no improvement I tried to get in contact with Dr. McConnell which is a project in itself. When I finally got her she added another medication and said we should do an ultrasound to rule out other things. The word cancer was mentioned and we were absolutely terrified. At this point I again asked her to run the GI panel to check for that bacteria. She agreed and I brought in a fecal sample right away. When handing over the fecal sample to the vet techs none of them had any idea what test needed to be run because Dr. McConnell did not put it in my dogs chart. They called her cell phone and she told them which test to run. They ran the wrong test, checking him for for parasites, which had already been ruled out on day 1 of this whole ordeal. The ultrasound was run and we awaited the results. Finally, I got a call from a tech telling me that my dog had tested negative for parasites which I had already known. I told the tech that we were waiting on the ultrasound results and the GI panel at which point she said she didn't know anything about it. I became annoyed on the phone and asked to speak to a doctor at which point the tech called me rule and said she was going to "hang up on me." However, within the hour I got a call from Dr. Cattiny (the ONLY reason they are getting 2 stars). After looking over my dogs chart he apologized profusely for the issues and mistakes that had been made, asked for a fresh fecal sample so that he could run the right tests for me, free of charge, went over his ultrasound results with me, assured me no cancer was found and put him on a steroid to help with the GI issues he was still having. The steroid worked and we awaited the fecal results. Due to all of the issues we decided to bring our dog to see a new vet at which point we asked Westwood for his records. They were evasive and rude every time I attempted to follow up. It took two weeks to get the records. After two weeks we still had no fecal panel results. Yesterday, I got a call from Dr. McConnell telling me that the fecal results were back and that my dog tested positive for the bacteria that I asked them to check for since day one. She began to discuss treatment at which point I told her due to all of the issues that I would be moving forward with his treatment elsewhere and asked if they would send me his results as soon as possible so that I could give them to his new vet. This morning I received his results and records via email. At the top was a note from Dr. McConnell saying she spoke to me and that I was "rude", which I wasn't and that I stated I was going to a different vet because "they made me wait for an appointment when they had an emergency." At no point in my conversation with her did I mention anything about a wait time. I did say that I felt it was unfair of her to not run the test I had asked for because I would have known what was wrong with my dog weeks ago and could have avoided pain and suffering for him and for us after she threw the cancer word around with no evidence of it. This place is full of liars, rude staff, one very rude vet (Dr. McConnell). Dr. Cattiny is really good but he's not always there. So if you want to deal with rude, high school level lies and drama when you are paying for expert veterinary services, this is the place for you. I would recommend this hospital for emergencies ONLY and then take your dog and records to your regular vet to be checked again.

Terrible experience! We took our dog there to be boarded while we were on vacation. We ended up picking our dog up a day early; we called ahead to make sure there was ample time for them to prepare him for departure. When we arrived he was not ready; when they brought our dog out, we paid our $569 bill and proceeded to walk out. As we were walking to our car, we noticed our dog had been injured on his nose and was bleeding.. we immediately went back inside to have him tended too and to clean his wound. We were then put into an examination room, and they took our dog away, so they could clean his wound. We waited in that examination room for over an hour! With no communication from anyone! I walked out of the exam room to see if I could speak to someone and saw the person who originally took our dog in. I had to ask her what was going on, since knowone had come to talk with us. She’s told us our dogs wound was cleaned, but we had to wait for a doctor to check it? And there was only ONE doctor on; and he was in surgery! I was surprised that I’m a veterinarian hospital who supposedly takes emergencies that only ONE doctor was on.. meanwhile the entire time we were there, which is now going on two hours, we did see another doctor there! When I asked how long it would take for the doctor to get out of surgery the “tech” was rude and not accommodating. She said she would follow up with a Statius report, disappeared and once again we were waiting..finally I asked for my dog! I was going to take him to our own Vet, because at this point we wanted to leave! Finally someone came out with our dog, said the wound was clean and we left! I understand things happen! But to not communicate and not take any responsibility for my dog getting hurt, while In your care is unacceptable. We will NEVER be back! PS. My dog stunk like urine! As well! 😡

IF YOU HAVE BIRDS DONT SEE DR. SILVER Took my sun conure to westwood today for a congested nose and squinty eyes. i assumed the squinty eyes were due to the congestion. i was told on the phone when i made the appointment i would be able to stay with my bird through the appointment. when i arrived the nurse who checked me in said i couldnt go with him. when i asked why he said because theres “open needles in the rooms and its just a liability “ um what? unfortunately i had no choice due to avian vets being sparse and i trusted them with my baby. A female doctor named dr. silver comes out ten minutes later with her hands in her pockets, shrugs her shoulders at me and says “ i dont see anything wrong with your bird”. i wasnt happy with her demeanor but i proceeded to explain his symptoms to her and she said she saw nothing and didnt believe he needed antibiotics. luckily i work with birds daily and have had birds since i was 9 years old therefore i knew there was something off and if i left with nothing theres a chance he could get worse. she then told me my bird “flew all around the room” which to me sounds like they couldnt handle him and chased him around the room for fifteen minutes, and that she listened to his breathing and heard nothing. i persisted for antibiotics and asked her to bring my bird out. another ten minutes goes by and they bring my poor chico out looking even worse then when he went in stressed and scared.( which in my opinion is because they didnt let the owner in to handle the bird better and keep him calm) . i went to the front desk put my bird on the counter and asked the receptionists to take a look and tell me if they think he looks fine. they said oh no there definitely looks like theres something going on. the manager went back and told dr. silver about my outrage and instead of coming to talk or apologize for her unprofessionalism they waived my exam fee. i am appalled at the treatment my bird and i received today and not only will never go here again but recommend people bring there birds elsewhere. here are the pictures of my bird on the receptionist counter so you can see for yourselves hes not well.
