How to Save Money at The Town Vets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I live in Mount Vernon and take an hour drive every time I have to take my dog (Branden) and cat (Dylan) to the vet. I do not mind the drive because Town Vets staff treats my babies as if they were their own with lots of love, patience, and care. Branden is a pitbull and very reactive towards male dogs, Nicole (vet tech) made sure that when we arrived, there were no dogs in the reception area and that Branden had a smooth transition. He was greeted with lots of love and taken straight into one of the rooms. Immediately, the doctor wanted to connect with him and make him feel loved and welcomed, which is something that I haven't experienced at other vets. Two days ago Dylan, wasn't feeling well and Dr. G took her time with her and gave me many options and was transparent with prices for everything we needed for Dylan. Many thanks to the professionals that helped with both of my babies. The staff loves to take pictures with them and just make you feel like family. If you are looking for a loving, caring, and transparent vet look no further !!

To all the pet owners and animal lovers in the area, I found them: the most attentive, kind, and empathetic vets I have ever met. Can't take the credit. Well Bred, the pet supply store in Madison recommended Town Vets after I shared the horrible experience I most recently had with another vet. My Kipper cat and I have visited many vets over the past 15 years since we've traveled from Pennsylvania to Colorado to New Jersey. Every doctor and every vet tech at Town Vets has the finesse needed for cat interactions (and dogs, but cats are trickier, in my opinion). We, the pet owners, are the voices of our pets; Town Vets are the experts who simplify what is happening and why. They truly collaborate with you to find the best treatment for your babies. Dr. G takes a holistic approach with integrative medicine, which is beyond refreshing and appreciated. I have never felt confident in leaving Kipper with any vet until now. For a skiddish cat, he is so comfortable with this crew. From a financial standpoint, I find them to be more affordable than my last vet, as well. Thank you for taking such incredible care of my KipCat.

We absolutely love the Town Vets! They are incredibly accommodating and honest. When our dog was diagnosed with diabetes, they were so patient and took the time to explain everything to us with kindness and care. I’m beyond grateful that we had Lemonade Pet Insurance—it made managing all the necessary tests so much easier. Thank you to the vets for your support during such a challenging time and for being so generous with your time and expertise! For the holidays they made ornaments of their pet clients so I’m adding Henry’s here.

The Best Veterinarian We've Ever Had! I can't say enough good things about this veterinary clinic. They are, hands down, the best my pets have ever had. The entire team is incredibly knowledgeable, compassionate, and accommodating—always treating every situation with the urgency and care it deserves. Whether it's a routine check-up or a sudden emergency, they respond immediately and thoroughly, giving me complete peace of mind. What sets them apart even more is their holistic approach to pet care. They take the time to understand each animal individually and integrate natural and preventive methods alongside traditional treatments. It’s rare to find a vet who is not only highly skilled but also truly invested in the long-term wellness of your pets. I trust them completely with my furry family members and am so grateful to have found them.
