How to Save Money at VCA Garden State Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I just called your office hoping that you would renew my dogs heartworm medication. As i explained I am having financial issues and because of it I haven't been able to bring dog for her physical. I am barely making ends meet. My credit cards are maxed out. I thank you for the services you provided for my dog in the past. I will be seeking another vet for her services. Thanks for your empathy. I just read your email. While I appreciate the fact that you care for the business, I think you need to show your staff some EMPATHY as well as train them how to be a little proactive, like for instance offer some sort of a payment plan . At least it would have shown your real concern for your clients (our pets)but sadly that didn't even come across in the conversation even after I told your receptionist that i had no  money. Your fees are ridiculous! Just walking in costs over 100.00. I will be calling your office on Monday to request to have my dogs paperwork faxed over to the new vet and if that is too big of an issue i will pick them up. Once again. I thank you so much for your Empathy!!! Show quoted text

Tired of being charged so much. There are more affordable options. Tired of the ever constant upsell. Tired of the doctor obviously not reviewing the history of my dog’s numerous other appointments at the facility prior to the new appointment. Not planning on ever returning.

We have been going to Dr. Fisher since about 1990. She is the best vet ever. I ended up moving farther away and went to another vet and learned quickly I needed Dr. Fisher. Its a longer drive but worth it. Something about her touch that makes all my dogs relax and calm down. She took care of my Buddy and when he passed our Buster. When he passed she took care of my Sage and now Mitzi. Thank you for everything you have done for me and all my dogs Dr. Fisher! (pics go Mitzi my dog now) then my old boy Sage then Buster and Buddy.

I had brought my dog to this hospital for his care since he was a puppy in 2009. Recently, he became very ill due to old age and a variety of other medical issues and he needed to be put down. I must say that the respect, advice, and care that I received from Dr. Maria Iturriaga during this trying time was exceptional. While it was a sensitive situation, the way that Dr. Maria and her staff handled it from being greeted at the front desk, to the careful attention from Dr. Maria and the technician provided during the visit, to the follow-up communications made all the difference in the experience. I carry with me a positive experience in an otherwise traumatic event in my life. I appreciate them for that.

I've been a client of this office since the original owner, and when he retired and I saw who had bought his business, I was more than happy to stay as their client. The new group of vets and staff are all dedicated to our beloved animals wellbeing, and all my animals have been treated with nothing but love and tenderness. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of an excellent vet service! UPDATE.. still love my drs here and they have added vet staff.i find though, since VCA aquired, they are extremely busy and getting an appointment can take a while if you are not open to seeing who ever is free. Still love these vets though!
