How to Save Money at Hillsborough County Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Maybe the Drs are 5-star but I couldn't get past the extremely rude receptionist who answered the phone when I called. I asked if they were accepting new patients. I was told that they were but a month out which was fine bec nobody within an hour of where I live, who was highly rated, was accepting new patients. I had a non-emergency situation with a cat with an upset stomach. A month out was better than nothing at all & IF I thought it was an emergency I'd have taken her to the ER without making a call for an appointment to begin with. Instead of making an appointment she became argumentative. First, she gave out unsolicited medical advice. She asked me if I checked the cat's teeth. Then she told me that I shouldn't change my pet's food while she's having stomach issues. I've had pets since I was a child. I'm 62. I know what I should & shouldn't do for basic care. She wasn't the Vet. I simply needed an appointment. Then, she condescendingly said "Pets do throw up you know." Yes, I'm well aware of that. Can I get an appointment for next month please? Then, she gave me the name of a vet closer to my town, which I had already researched. The vet got 4.2 stars in their online reviews. I told her NO WAY am I taking my pet to any vet w/ less than 4.9 in their online reviews & that's WHY I had called THEM. Try reading the 1-star reviews. No sane person would take a goldfish to these hacks let alone a cat or dog. Finally, she told me that she didn't want to book me an appointment bec I lived "too far away" & if my pet needed more appointments I wouldn't show. WHAT?!! I said to her "HOW do you know that?!" An HOUR is NOT a LONG drive for a Dr/vet or ANY appt. I do it on a regular basis driving from the Lakes Region to Concord, Manchester, even Londonderry for regular appointments! That is NONE of her business! All this interrogation & argumentative confrontational nasty behavior simply bec I wanted to book an appointment for my pet. Unbelieveable. Good riddance! I immediately called another vet (Sugar River Vet in Grantham), gasp...an hour away and...shocking, they were extremely polite & booked me an appointment no questions or snarky comments made about the "distance". In all of my 62 yrs, I have NEVER had a Receptionist at a Dr's office or ANY office for that matter, tell me that I live too far away & refuse to book an appointment, regardless of the type of care I needed or how many appointments I might need. Most of us these days have to drive to the big city or an hour away out of necessity or simply by choice. She was WAY out of line & has NO BUSINESS answering phones or being in customer service!

I have been coming to Hillsborough County Veterinary Hospital since 2006, upon a referral from a friend when my 2 month old husky began having seizures and I was very displeased with the vets I had been trying since my old vet was bought out and turned into a money mill, not a veterinary service. I was so pleased at the service and compassion, and how the doctors listened to me and my concerns, and the direction I wanted to go in for her care. Throughout the last 18 years, I have brought all my pets to them, and always get the best care. Every single staff member from the receptionist to the doctors have been amazing and compassionate. I recommend them to EVERYONE and get numerous thank you's from my friends who do go there. I cannot speak highly enough of this facility and the care and attention every member of my family receives. There is not a bad doctor in the bunch, and the vet techs are all amazing, as well.

As one of their founding families that has brought our pets to their practice for over 30 years. It all started when our young dog got hit by a car in front of our house. At the time Cheryl and Ken were just opening the practice, they hadn't started seeing patients yet. I carried my pup who was in shock in unannounced and they saved his life. We have had many kinds of pets. Mostly dogs and cats but once my son's rat was sick and they referred us to a specific doctor who saved his life. Even the sad times were handled with caring love for the pets and their people. I can honestly say they are the best.

There's a reason this place has five star reviews! Amazingly kind, caring & respectful staff. Between the vets, vet techs and front desk people, this place should be used as a teaching model for vet school students. Amazing, prompt service with state of the art equipment. If you are looking for a new place to send your animals, look no further. You already found it!
