How to Save Money at Lewis & Clark Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Several issues with this clinic. The first being they won't examine your animal in front of you. So you have no idea what they actually do. I spent $400 in less than a week after two visits, only to find out my dog wasn't even fully examined. Second, every time I did bring my dog in, the vet would always come back saying he needed XYZ surgery. It's as if they pull straws out of a hat and whatever straw they draw, that's what surgery your dog needs. It rubbed me wrong. I brought in a very sick dog and the vet couldn't "control him," but she had no issues charging me for an examination she admitted he didn't get. Never will I take my dog back there.

Please do not take your animals to Lewis and Clark, I took my dog there since she was a puppy and I feel guilty every day I didn’t realize sooner how incompetent, negligent, and uncaring they were. We spent an insane amount of money there, attempting to help our dog. I did finally realize they were not taking the things I was saying about my dog’s breathing seriously, but unfortunately that wasn’t until after they insisted she should have a dental surgery. After which she had an awful time breathing (way worse than ever before, snd she was doing very well immediately beforehand). When we came to them with our concerns, Dr. brookelle told us it was “normal” she was having attacks 24/7 and couldn’t even breathe while walking lol. We finally got her better due to partly our own suggestions and at this time she was such a complicated case and on so many medications it was honestly hard to switch vets (I tried). Unfortunately, things went downhill again and one night she was suffering immensely and not being able to breathe well. I called L&C and was told they don’t take respiratory cases at night unless their gums and tongue are already purple from lack of oxygen (yeah, really). So when they started to actually get purple (which is hard to judge depending on the dogs gums) and she started spitting out fluid trying to breathe, she (Dr. Brookelle) said she wanted me to wait another two hours until they were open. I said no, I don’t think she’s getting air. Poor choice of words I guess, because she said “well if she wasn’t getting air she’d probably be dead” (word for word); apparently I should’ve said “enough air” - my bad. I still had to wait an hour. This dog was in such agony, I just couldn’t believe how grumpy the vet was from me having woken her up. While she was there that day, they basically gave up and did nothing for her, so we took her to Red River Emergency Hospital (should’ve went sooner, lesson learned - but the night she went in to L&C I didn’t know if she’d make it that long and I was afraid of the drive). Red River had to spend at too much time narrowing things down because I couldn’t get the right paperwork from Lewis and Clark until 3 days in (had to call 3 times). Finally, they found out what was wrong with a fairly simple physical exam of her throat under mild sedation. It was something I had asked about TWICE at L&C and was either dismissed or there was some incredibly poor communication. Unfortunately, it was too late at that point and our dog (10 years old) didn’t even make it long enough to consider surgery, which was probably too late anyway but we were waiting to talk to surgeon). I mostly dealt with Dr. Brookelle at Lewis and Clark, and there were many times she dismissed what was going on but Dr. Kelly was also not taking my concerns seriously when I tried to get a second opinion on the dental surgery, I think he was a) going to back up his vet’s opinion and b) didn’t really closely look at what was going on with her or closely listen to me. I do blame myself but you also hope you can trust vets who have worked with your pet for years. EDIT: I see the response by owner claiming we were communicated with more clearly than we were, which is why I mentioned in my initial review perhaps there were some communication issues. When the bronchoscopy was recommended, we were told that Lucy’s issues were almost surely being caused by the elongated soft palate but if we wanted to double check for something odd like a tumor we could; since the dental surgery seemed to cause so many issues, this seemed like not a good enough reason to put another tube down her throat. An elongated soft palate surgery was recommended, this would have not fixed the issue and she may not have survived. Nothing excuses that last night, and that wasn’t addressed. Again, the referral suggestions (and yes we did the echo) were sort of like well if you want to check for other things, you can. We absolutely should’ve went somewhere else sooner (I agree with that) but it was not presented as suggested.
