How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would highly recommend VEG for your pets emergency care. The staff are extremely knowledgeable, professional, supportive, and caring. The ability to stay with our pet during the entirety of his care was phenomenal. The cost is reasonable as well. Buddy, our senior Chihuahua, had respiratory distress and cardiac issues. VEG was recommended by the local pet urgent care, who had conferred with VEG when Buddy's needs exceeded their abilities. We opted to take him home first because he seems to stabilize. When his condition worsened, we took him to VEG. We called while en route and they were ready for us when we arrived. We had a feeling that this was Buddy's last fight and were afraid he would be alone. However, VEG is an open care facility. Buddy needed to be in the O2 kennel for hours throughout the night. We were able to be with him the whole time. This was unique and so appreciated. The level of care and support provided by Dr. Brown and her staff throughout the night was beyond our expectations. The transfer of care the next morning to Dr. Lanza (sp?) and her staff was seamless. They kept Buddy stable throughout the night until we were able to transfer him to our vet the following morning. They spoke with our vet as we were leaving. Unfortunately, Buddy lost his fight. The staff of VEG showed a level of care, support, and sincere dedication to their calling, that helped us through this extremely difficult time. We sincerely appreciate them for all they did for us and Buddy. We highly recommend them for your pets emergency care. And will most definitely being using them if needed for our other pets.

Our family vet was out sick on a day that our little pooch had an urgent and mysterious medical situation. I apparently am useless in the face of my lethargic and shaking pup and called VEG while driving there, panicked and distraught. From that very first phone conversation, everyone was incredibly patient, kind, and empathetic. They took such good care of our baby girl and me! They didn’t seem taken aback that I was disheveled and crying right along with my pup while she was treated and they went out of their way to make us as comfortable as possible. I also appreciated seeing how kind they were with everyone (of every species!) that came through the door. You can tell that they really care! We’ll definitely have these folks on speed dial for any future veterinary emergencies!

This place is excellent. When I called about my guinea pigs, a vet came to the phone within a minute of me being placed on hold. They provided 5 star treatment the whole time - not just for popcorn and peanut, but also to me and my 5yo. I got home and had questions, and the tech handed the phone to a vet immediately. 100/10 could not recommend this place enough.

Our dog Khaleesi was experiencing severe diarrhea and nausea the day before Christmas Eve, so we called VEG to see if they recommended we bring her in. In spite of it being an extremely busy day, we were encouraged to come in and were greeted warmly immediately upon arriving. Even though there were a LOT of other patients, the entire staff was calm, professional, thorough, and most of all, incredibly kind and compassionate. Khaleesi's needs were thankfully not as severe or immediate as other patients, so we did have to wait a long time. It was still by far the most pleasant emergency/urgent care experience (human or animal) that I have ever had. We were able to sit on a comfy little sofa with our dog, and we were moved to an even more comfortable private room as soon as one became available. Snacks, coffee, and drinks were available - pizza was even bought and offered to all the humans working or waiting. I am normally an anxious, crying wreck in situations like this, but the VEG staff's professionalism and grace under pressure made me feel so at ease. Literally everyone we encountered was awesome, but I would specifically like to shout-out Dr. Chapman, Jessie, Sarah, GG, and Joie. The ability to stay with Khaleesi the whole time that we were there was amazing and a game-changer. The care she received was very thorough, and we were confident in her diagnosis and treatment plan. She is already feeling much better and seems to be on the road to a full recovery. Thank you, VEG, for making a very stressful day as easy as it could have possibly been and for the outstanding care you showed to us and our sweet girl!

I can't thank Dr. Dawn Lanza and the entire staff of VEG Chapel Hill enough. I brought my Siberian husky (Sonya) in on a Saturday night (last night) with a very swollen paw, which was clearly extremely painful for her. She sustained an injury while on a walk around a pond when she suddenly chased after a rabbit in the brush. Dr. Lanza and her staff immediately started working on her when we arrived. Dr. Lanza knew instantly that it was a snake bite. She and everyone with whom I interacted at VEG were extremely compassionate, kind, and skilled. Dr. Lanza encompasses everything you could ever wish for in a vet - she is very smart, caring, and unassuming. She communicates everything you need to know in a super supportive way. In short, she is the perfect fit for a vet in an ER setting. She and all of the vet techs treated Sonya as if she were their own dog. You just can't beat that. Dr. Lanza provided me with a wealth of information about treatment options, ranging from taking a supportive, watchful approach to proceeding with anti-venom right away (with its associated risks). It turned out that Sonya did very well while under observation with pain meds and fluids. Her bloodwork looked good, so we did not need to proceed with anti-venom and I very happily took her home after several hours of observation rather than keeping her overnight. VEG is lucky to have Dr. Lanza and her team. I have the utmost confidence and trust in them and can't recommend them highly enough. VEG Chapel Hill is where you want to be in an emergency with your pet!
