How to Save Money at Northland Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’m sure the dr is amazing but I’ll never know. I’ve tried a few times to establish care and also reached out for emergency care. ‘Not taking new clients’ is the first thing said. Today I called at 8:30 (website stated open at 8) for emergency care for my new puppy. Was cut off being told ‘first off we don’t open till 9, we only have one dr and not taking new clients’. Then hung up on. I wouldnt recommend a place at all with that type of service

We unfortunately had to put our dog to sleep. I called frantically before noon yesterday and the staff said to take our time and they would wait for us! From the time we arrived until the time we left we had excellent care from Dr. Harvey and the other two staff members! They all were very caring and compassionate!! Thank you for this good experience considering the sad time.

The people that sold me my home in Virginia highly recommended this Animal Hospital. However, I have lived here almost 2 years now, and have not been able to get my dog (she started having seizures a few months after I moved here)into see anyone one here and the only responses I have gotten is they are not taking new clients.... I was finally able to find a really good Animal Hospital ( MESABA ANIMAL HOSPITAL) that has been seeing her now. They are excellent with my dog.

Dr. Aluni Sr., I believe, was an Exceptional Veterinarian, wise beyond textbooks, we had used this Animal Hospital for several decades because of him and his knowledge and compassion for animals. I'm not sure if he is still practicing, but this clinic has a Friendly staff, knowledgeable vets, a nice area to walk your pets as well.

I have had dogs and cats as family members my entire life. As a child, my dad brought our dogs to Dr. Aluni when he operated a small veterinarian office in Aurora - outside of his practice in Virginia. As I moved on outside of my folks roof, I tried other veterinarians in the area to only, what I see now looking back, a successful yet mediocre sense of what I call good health in today's standards. I did return to the Northland Animal Hospital with Dr. Aluni around 8 years ago - 2013 , to be exact, after my hairy partner in crime, SamSam was experiencing skin irritation from God only knows. The Good Doctor, Dr. Aluni rolled up his sleeves and threw a Hail Mary and unbelievably cured SamSam of his misery! I've been bringing Sam to Dr. Aluni ever since. Around 20 years ago I returned home from a job only to find my children's dog, Fozzy, very pale in the mouth and earflaps with severe lethargy. I called NAH asap and Dr. Aluni worked him over. There happened to be a Greyhound scheduled to be euthanized the next morning, and to my wonderment, suggested that maybe he would perform a full transfusion in order to save Fozzy. Since Fozzy's prognosis was a morbid reality as well as the Greyhounds, he did the deed. Long story short, Fozzy lived through my divorce and championed through my ex-wife's move to Texas with our children - and lived another fulfilling 10 years, helping my (still good friends) ex-wife raise our kids. The staff at the NAH are WONDERFUL and very invested in their roll at NAH. I could probably go there alone, in a grumpy mood and within 10 minutes sitting in the waiting area, be fully revamped to a state of pleasantry and bliss. If anybody out there is looking for a change for their fur baby's care, I highly, HIGHLY recommend the Northland Animal Hospital. I bet SamSam's skin on it!!!!
