How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is our second pet we have brought to Banfield and entrusted their care and done an impeccable job. They actually found a heart condition with my first dog prior to doing a scheduled dental cleaning and have earned my trust repeatedly. Prices I believe are fair and with the plans they offer help that upfront cost after exams and any shots our dog may need. Only recommendation is to staff two people at the front desk for check-ins because it is either a 20 minute wait while in person or waiting on hold when calling in, hence the reason for the 4 stars. Otherwise, I couldn’t be happier with the care we have received for our pets. Thank you to the doctors, vet techs, and staff at Banfield.

Our local Banfield staff are amazing. Thank you for many great years Dr. Seiffert and staff. 5 stars! However, the optimum wellness plans I caution. We have been paying for a wellness plan for 16 years, we recently had to put our dog down and we're informed we owed a cancelation fee on the plan. We're not a family to purchase and cancel plans when we don't need it. We had it for 16 straight years! Do better for us that have stayed with you for many years and have been loyal. More bad news after just putting our pet down. Do better.

Love Banfield, confused by the negative reviews. I was recommended by the shelter that I adopted my dog from in 2017 and we have been signed up for their wellness plan ever since. When my dog had an allergic reaction and they were fully booked, they somehow fit him in that day. I can tell the assistance their really care about my dog with how they interact with him. Also, their app is also really convenient for scheduling and you are able to talk to a vet on it 24/7. Have not had any issues with the service itself, however the clinic is in Pet Smart, so it is a little inconvenient trying to avoid other dogs if you have a reactive dog.

Don't go here, it's a terrible place! They'll stick your pet in a corner for six hours and then claim they're "aggressive." And charging for doing nothing?? Absolute rip off. Really poor communication, attitude from the staff, absolute incompetence when I had to check in (it took 40 minutes). I don't know if y'all are understaffed or just had a shitty day but I won't ever be back and I'll be telling everyone around not to go here for their pet care.

Sadly we had a very ill animal and called many different locations to get an urgent appt. Banfield said they could get us in, we left promptly and arrived early for the appt. When we got there, there were several people standing in line, we waited in line for a half hour with our visibly ill animal in my daughter’s arms. They checked in routine animal visits, we arrived early for our appt and when we got up to the desk we were told they actually couldn’t see us. This waisted precious time. We were able to find another vet out of town that could see our animal a couple hours later but our animal passed in route to that appt. I feel this vet practice was irresponsible in giving us an appointment when we had such a time sensitive situation when they didn’t actually have a visit or availability to see us.
