How to Save Money at Companion Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve already recommended you to several people!! This was an incredible experience from start to end. I was a very nervous pet owner when I reached out to CAH due to a bunny seeming unwell. We’d never brought him in before, so in addition to worrying about his well-being, I was concerned about being at a new vet clinic where I didn’t know the staff. Our rabbit is almost 10, and I was also really nervous about what news we might receive. Everything was amazing from my phone call with Sarah, to my appointment with Dr. Griffin and Izzy. The team gently asked me questions and made me immediately feel at ease and offered hope for his situation. After the exam, Dr. Griffin had a variety of options and allowed me to ask all my questions and she was very truthful in her answers which helped to make a decision on how to move forward. I left the appointment feeling very encouraged and hopeful. Fast forward four days and our senior bunny is doing so much better and our expectations for what he should be doing at his age are realistic and we are enjoying our time with him. We have definitely found our vet for our rabbits! As far as cost, everything was very reasonable and Dr. Griffin was up front on charges and I never felt any pressure. She simply offered options and gave her opinion when I asked. So happy to have visited this clinic!

Referred to Companion Animal Hospital by a patient of mine who is a vet. Dr. Schloss saw my dude MoMo today and she was awesome. If a vet can come in a room and repeat everything that you told the tech, that’s wonderful patient care and shows a cohesive team. The tech was great and was well-versed in triaging/intake and treatment plans. The front desk was friendly and got us in a room as soon as we walked in the door. My big boy has been itchy for a while and instead of throwing him on meds right away, Dr. Schloss suggested we do an in office steroid injection to relieve some of the itching short term and trial new food to figure out what kind of allergies he has going on. He also has ear infections which explains why his ears were extra itchy. There were no unreasonable tests or procedures, and the services were reasonably priced. They were very gentle with my boy and didn’t restrain him unreasonably when giving vaccines or cleaning his ears - just enough to get the job done safely. For 9 different (itemized) services - including 1 med injection, 2 vaccines, rx food (always expensive) & 2 other rx’s, ear cleaning and the office visit, it was $400. I know places that would have charged a couple hundred more for the same services. Nice to see a clinic that allows the docs to practice medicine instead of acting like salespeople. Cat pics for tax

The level of professionalism and care at this place is unmatched! They truly care about you and your animals and don’t want you to break the bank helping your fur babies. They were able to see my cat same day for bladder issues and we created a treatment plan for him. He unfortunately didn’t get better and I had to bring him back in and the doctors and staff were all so attentive, kind and patient. The vet, Dr Karen Wheeler explained things well and answered all my questions and concerns. Two days after his appointment Dr Wheeler called me to check in on Diego and figure out his next course of action. I cannot be thankful enough for the level of care and compassion Diego received there from EVERYONE. I truly felt like he was in the best hands for his 2 night hospital stay there. Dr. Carlson was his vet for his 2 night stay and was excellent, she called me multiple times a day to inform me on Diego and even texted me a few pictures of him while he stayed there. From the receptionists, to the vet techs, to the vets, and everyone in between, thank you for being kind, caring and helping my baby! We are so thankful to have found this place and will be lifelong members of Companion Animal Hospital!

We’ve taken our dogs to Companion Animal Hospital for a number of years and have always had good experiences there. The doctors are compassionate, caring, & professional. When we had to put one of our dogs down, Dr. Wheeler was there offering sympathy & calming words. The front desk staff is fantastic. They, too, are caring individuals who have great interaction with the patients, as well as the owners. I highly recommend Companion Animal Hospital.

I had a horrible experience here today. This morning on a walk my daughter and mother found an injured cat who had a collar and a vaccination tag, stuck in the street, meowing and crying for help. They were able to safely transport her to a carrier and I arrived to find a hospital to help. We called around because we knew how urgent it was, were able to get the kitty to Pilot Knob animal Hospital to check for a chip and advised that these situations go to Companion, and they would be able to assist. So we went. We got there, and the employee asked me why we were there. I informed her of the situation, and expressed my concerns about the cat in distress we were trying to help. She said “is it even alive?” And then followed up by “we only help if it’s animal control they have to do intake, you can call them”, animal control was closed today, we later found out. She then looked at me and said “I don’t know why they told you to come here, we only see people’s healthy pets.” She was cold, rude, and I’d be curious to know how she interacts with the animals that are regularly seen there. The kitty we were trying to save later passed away due to internal trauma in her bottom half, it makes you wonder if they had cared a little more this could have been intercepted. Will not be back or ever recommend this location. How rude.
