How to Save Money at BluePearl Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

On Sunday at 5:00 PM, our dog started having severe respiratory distress. We called the vets in Grand Rapids, MN, and not one had emergency services on a Sunday. They all did, however, refer us to the BluePeral Pet Hospital in Duluth, a 2hr drive. In hindsight, it was the best thing for our pet and us. We arrived a couple of minutes before 8:00 pm, and EVERYONE was so helpful and caring. Our pet was put on oxygen right away for comfort. Dr. Hart did a comprehensive exam, and with his professionalism and calm approach along with an in-depth explanation of options and possible outcomes meant everything. It turned out not to be the outcome we had hoped for, but Dr. Hart and the staff helped make the final transition as smooth and comfortable for our pet and ourselves as possible. They also provided us with a permanent set of our pets paw prints. Many thanks to all !!

We live an hour away and our 5lb Yorkiepoo ingested a lot of chocolate. Blue pearl was amazing from the start with giving advice as we drove to them, seeing him right away as we arrived, and gave him constant care for almost 2 days as he slowly got better. They gave us updates a couple times every day and they held, cuddled, and gave him warm towels so he wouldn’t be scared. We were so happy with the care and they even refunded us some of the initial cost we were quoted. This place was amazing.

Blue Pearl has always given the highest level of care to my Pugs. They explain things very explicitly and explain your options and potential consequences. Emergency services are always expensive so it is best to have Care Credit, Good Credit and Pet Insurance. I recommend Trupanion Pet Insurance. Both Dr Hart and Dr Banwart were exceptional. I highly recommend Blue Pearl.

I've had to take my dog here twice and I've been happy with the experience both times. Most recently, I had to take my dog there to be treated for a bite wound. They provided excellent customer service from the time we called until the time he left the hospital. The wait was a little long, but worth it for the care my dog received. The vet called me to provide updates and to walk me through my options before providing care, which I really appreciated. I also appreciate that they take Care Credit. The instructions we received for the aftercare for straightforward, and they made it known they would be available to answer any questions we may have had during his healing process. The hope is obviously to never need their services again, but if necessary, I would not hesitate to bring either of my dogs here.

Refused to see my dog who was having an allergic reaction and her face was swelling and told me to go to the cities or "give her a bath" as if it would help. Who has the ability to drive all the way to the cities in the middle of the night with a dog who could stop breathing on the way? Cold and callous vet tech who wouldn't even make sure my dog was ok because "the vet is in surgery right now so we aren't taking any new animals tonight" even though they are the only after hours ER vet in the area. She acted like I was an inconvenience. I drove almost an hour to get there late at night and they wouldn't even let us in the door. They are lucky my puppy didn't die! Adding, since the owner responded: Teach your staff to have more compassion and offer better solutions then. The girl I talked to was rude and cold. I asked for advice and was told to do something that would in no way help my dog. I would have waited inside and had them monitor her until she could be seen. And driving 2 1/2 hours isn't "prompt". She wouldn't even tell me WHERE in the cities and just brushed me off. I could practically hear her eyes rolling. I understand if it's busy, but I was the only car in the lot. It shouldn't have come to that.
