How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

MY 9LB. 11 YEAR OLD CHIHUAHUA WENT IN FOR WELLNESS CHECK. SHE WAS GIVEN FLEA,TICK, MOSQUITO PREVENTION, ROUNDWORMS HOOKWORMS,RABIES,DAPP,LEPTO& LYME. That night she vomited in bed. Next day vomited 3 more times & the next night she vomited again. She hadn't eaten anything and would not take her epilepsy medicine. She started showing signs of her epilepsy the next day after exam. I had to take her to another vet and the cost was $581.00. She got medicines to stop vomiting. This continued for a total of 4 days. I thought I was going to lose her. I was devastated. I immediately canceled my plan and will not return to Banfield to even make a purchase. The vet should NOT of given all those meds at once with her age and epilepsy. PLEASE BEWARE AND BE CAREFUL IF YOU ARE USING THIS PARTICULAR VET.

Do not recommend..turn over rate is crazy. Bad service. They don't do a good job at caring for pets, all about money. I pulled my dog from that place, haven't looked back. I remember when one of the workers said they found a flea on my dog. Then said he got it from another dog there. Why they kept them together is beyond me. My dog would be there 6 plus hours at a time. One time I dropped him off at 9am they called at 5pm for pickup. Ridiculous! I reported it.

I am writing to express my frustration and concern regarding the inadequate treatment my puppy received at your hospital. We recently brought him in for roundworms, and he was only administered a single dose of dewormer during the visit. To my shock, no additional medication was provided for at-home care, leaving us with no clear plan to address his ongoing condition. Over the next several days, my puppy continued to experience persistent diarrhea. I made numerous phone calls to your team, seeking guidance and an explanation. Despite my concerns, the only response I received was to administer antidiarrheal medication, which did not address the underlying issue. It was incredibly disheartening to see my puppy’s health worsen despite my repeated efforts to seek proper care. When I called again, the vet tech asked what medication my puppy had been sent home with—a clear indication that there was a miscommunication, as no medication was provided. In search of answers, I took my puppy to another veterinary clinic where he was immediately re-treated for roundworms. Upon reviewing his case, multiple veterinarians agreed that the dosage of dewormer he received at Banfield was inadequate to properly treat the condition. This is unacceptable, as it directly impacted my puppy’s health and prolonged his discomfort.

Highly do not recommend, they do not do a thorough job checking your pet and expect you to know what is wrong with them. I have also been trying to cancel this “Wellness Plan” for over a year and they keep charging me for it. STAY AWAY

Corporate environment is cold and uncaring. My pet isn't a patience but a cog in their wheel when it comes to service. Drop in the morning and he'll be there for the day. Not sure our family doctors operate this way.
