How to Save Money at Dunckel Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The most professional and caring vet I have ever gone too. I had an emergency situation with my dog that I had raised since she was a puppy (basically raised with me) that I had to unexpectedly put to sleep. This decision was one if not the hardest decision I have ever had to make. I was extremely emotional, upset and angry with the situation. They treated me with so much care and understanding. The last moments with my baby were so special. They treated her just like their own and helped me through the process. She was laid to rest in the most peaceful way possible. Although this loss is devastating to me, I am so glad that I went to this vet. Thank you for everything you did for us that day. I know it was just another day as you guys deal with tough situations everyday, I will forever remember this interaction. Thank you for loving my baby in the short period of time you knew her and for all you guys do.

If I could rate 1000 stars I would. I was nervous after booking the appointment because the receptionist over the phone was not very kind, very professional but borderline rude. After arriving they instantly took me and my cat back to the "cat hallway" (where we never once saw a dog although we did hear a small bit of barking) and they asked me if they could give my cat a towel sprayed with calming spray. The wait was very short and they took us to the room and asked a few questions before they left us to wait for the doctor. The doctor was AMAZING. I've never had such a wonderful experience with a professional in my life. He did a basic check on my cat and listened to me intently before prescribing medicine for him and giving me some tips. He was so kind and friendly, a true animal lover I feel I can trust with all my pets. Thank you so much Dr. nobody!!! (His preference in name lol)

Great vet! My dog was sick and I could not get her into my regular vet. The wait was about one week. Why is that? You shouldn't have to wait if your dog is sick to get her in to your vet. Dunckel Vet was able to see my dog the same day! And the online appointment is very easy to do. They did a great check-up on my dog and asked lots of questions. My dog is much better, 2 days after they treated her. I would highly recommend this vet!

This used to be a good vet. They were expensive but worth it because of the quality of care. Now they are just a lot more expensive and the quality is poor. Earlier this month, we were moving out of state and I called TWICE to try and pay ahead for our dog's prescription medication before the appointment date so that it would be there when we went in. I was refused that option and told they stock it and it would be there. So when we went in, of course, they had only a limited supply. They sent what they had and then when I asked for a way I could order the rest online, they said they only give paper prescription copies or you have to buy from their online store. Just ridiculous. Last year or year before, we took a cat in for euthanasia. My son and I were very sad but we'd finally made the decision to have our cat put to sleep. When the tech came in she asked if we wanted one last checkup. We had already had an exam and found out that he wasn't doing well. We had done our due diligence to make sure this was the right decision and we were finally ready to let go. Why would they ask if we wanted another checkup? They had all the medical info in their records. It seemed very much like a money grab and it was not appreciated or appropriate. Happy to say goodbye to this vet!

I first came to know the vets and staff at Dunckel Veterinary Hospital when my cat Alexander got sick with kidney disease. The doctors were amazing and walked me through all the ways I could care for Alexander and when it came time to say goodbye they helped me through my sadness and grief. I now have my sweet kitty Ari and would trust no one else to care for him than the staff and doctors at Dunckel. They know how much our pets mean to us and go above and beyond, including and not limited to letting me know to always have an Animal Emergency phone number in my contacts for those unexpected pet emergencies and I have had a few over the years. Thank you to everyone at Dunckel Veterinary Hospital for taking care of my fur babies!!
