How to Save Money at Midcoast Animal Emergency Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My mom, who loves her dogs incredibly, came to this vet after her puppy had broken its leg. How the puppy broke their leg, she didn’t know. When coming to this location, they made her feel like she had intentionally harmed the dog and made remarks for her entire visit. I can vouch that she loves her dogs very much, and has gone into debt more than once trying to take care of them. She needed help, not to be judged.

I blame Midcoast Animal Emergency Clinic for the death of my dog. I called on Saturday night because my lab threw up and it had obvious blood clots in it, she also had diarrhea for a couple days prior. The staff’s response was “try to think of anything she may have gotten into, monitor her, give her a blend diet tomorrow (Sunday), and bring her to her normal vet on Tuesday.” Again, she threw up blood clots. It wasn’t like streaks of blood, it was actual blood clots. Okay. Monday (Labor Day 2022) Daisy took a quick turn for the worst. My spouse loaded her up in the car, I climbed in the back of my SUV and off we went. I called the clinic after we had already left the house. This time with worse symptoms. She didn’t want move and she was breathing heavily. They took Daisy’s info and said call when you get here. I called when I was 2 minutes away, told them I didn’t like how she was breathing. She said bring her in when I get there. We pulled into the parking lot and that’s when I realized she had passed. Had you only seen her on Saturday or even referred her to a different clinic, she might still be alive. So thank you midcoast animal emergency clinic for killing one of my families best friends.

Cannot say enough kind words about the staff, especially Lauren, and their care for my cat Judy. They were transparent about costs and communicated with me with compassion, keeping me updated about Judy's care and treatment while she was hospitalized. Your pet will be seen and treated based off of their criticality and that may change as they triage new incoming patients. So be prepared for to wait (I just told myself while Judy and I were having a very bad day, others were sadly much worse). You can wait in the office or in your car. Bring a book, a snack, and whatever you need to keep your pet comfortable. There is a restroom for you and a nice grassy lawn for your puppers if needed. Thanks for everything Lauren and the rest of the midcoast staff. Judy has made a full recovery. ❤️

Professional, kind, caring and gentle staff and reasonable rates. Empathetic. Couldn't have asked for more while dealing with the end of a beloved pets life. This retired therapy dog got the end of life care that she deserved, without staff having knowledge of her years of service. That said a lot to me. They were very respectful of my feelings and grief process as well. Thank you all.

Brought our cat Frances in for a UTI. We were seen promptly. The staff were very kind and gentle with the cat. They explained concepts and procedures patiently and in detail. Overall they made what is often a challenging experience into a pleasant one. Frances is on the mend. Thank you!
