How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have never been more disgusted with a veterinary practice in my life. My 13 year old dog has what I suspect to be a terrible UTI. After looking at multiple Banfield locations I was able to book an appointment at this location. At 6pm on Friday, the day before my appointment, and after all other Banfield locations have closed the location called to tell me they were canceling my appointment. I expressed I really needed the appointment as my dog was suffering. They stated my appointment was booked online as a drop off and they wouldn't allow drop-offs. I said it was no problem, I would come in with my dog. She stated that wasn't possible and I would have to schedule another appointment in THREE WEEKS. I again expressed my dog has a UTI and we've been waiting for days for this appointment, she absolutely cannot wait and they waited to call me after all other vets had closed. The woman on the phone said maybe I could try an ER. This is absolutely disgusting. I pay Banfield a giant amount of money so they can recommend my senior dog suffer with a UTI for three weeks and cancel my appointment with absolutely zero notice. After this, I will absolutely be canceling my pet plan and I recommend absolutely NO ONE every buy one. You are nothing but money to them, they will ignore your every request, need, and phone call and let your pet suffer.

I brought my current cat and new kitten in for check ups and shots back in December/ January and all went well. I was worried that my kitten had worms, so I brought in a fecal sample for them to test, which they never did. They gave me multiple doses of topical treatment (Revolution Plus) for worms, which didn’t seem right, and it wasn’t. Now both of my cats likely have worms, since I found one on my kitten the other day and they now share litter boxes. I have also been trying to schedule a spay appointment for the kitten for the past month with them, and each time I call I’m put on hold for 20 minutes, then they say they will call me back, which also never happens, or they have a message saying they’re closed or busy. The doctor is often “out”, which seems strange to me at a place where there is supposed to be available care for your pets. My kitten is now in her first heat, which can last days or weeks, and now I have to wait even longer to get her spayed, and she has to be uncomfortable for an unknown amount of time. I was able to schedule an appointment at my family’s local vet in Baltimore from my first call to them, within the same week, and will be moving my cats there instead for further treatment, despite the long commute. I would highly recommend a family vet to a corporate one, as they seem to care more about pet care rather than money.

I’ve been coming to Banfield for 4 years bringing my grandpa Bella, we have always been treated with courtesy and professionalism. And I’ve developed a great relationship with the doctor and staff. And when I bring Bella she usually little frightened but when she leaves of course she’s happy to see me and she treats your staff like she’s known them forever.

Thee Hny Bee

This is the worst Banfield I have ever experienced. Workers are rude and lack concern. If the workers hate their job they need to quit. Simple. I was skeptical to bring my pup back after 2nd visit but I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. Not sure what was done to him on his first visit but on his 2nd he was absolutely terrified of the workers and Doctors at this location. He cried, and ran from them and literally cowered at the sight of the workers. This is wayyy out of my dogs character. I know something was done to him at this location. Please do not go here.

I give no stars because someone canceled my plan then sent me a $1000 bill when I only missed 2 months of payment and had the nerve to put it on my credit report! I give 0stars but I have to put at least one star to post
