Our 9 year old Bernese Mt girl started having issues with her back legs. After two vet appts and seeing a surgeon specialist, cancer was ruled out and spinal issues were confirmed. We were told to see a neurological surgeon and were staring down scary surgeries while already dealing with an almost immobile dog, who was visibly in pain. We decided to reach out to the Maizels, who are my parents vet, to see if we could at least get her more comfortable till we could figure out what to do. The Maizels fit us in quickly, came an extra distance and within a few minutes not only had her more comfortable but she was walking independently and even climbed the stairs while my back was turned. One week ago we were worried she’d never be the same again but here she is, back to her old self just a little slower as she heals. Grateful is too inadequate a word. The Maizels are kind, compassionate, and just lovely people all around. I cannot say thank you enough!

I called him in a complete panic that we were going to loose our girl. He said he would work us in but it would be late. He got to my house and 9pm. He explained everything. My 170lbs dog went from not moving for 12 hours to this morning she walked down our steps to go outside. He checked on us throughout the day. He is amazing and I could be more thankful that came into our lives.. thank you is not a big enough word but all that I have. He is truly A wonderful Dr and person. He just became our new vet. So grateful 🙏

I had to call Dr. Maizels for the most unpleasant of services -- to request euthanasia for my 14yo dog who had stopped eating and standing. Actually, I made several calls (this was on a Friday) to several mobile vets servicing the Harford county area. My dog hated going to the vet (she would tremble the entire time she was there on the tile floor) and I didn't want her last moments to be ones of fear. Some vets could come out in a few days; others wanted us to wait almost 2 weeks. Dr. Maizels (really Nurse Patty with the scheduling, more on that later) was the first mobile vet to say he would be there the next day. Dr. Maizels did not come to our house to perform a euthanasia. He came to perform a Wellness Check. When he came in, N was in her comfy pillow bed. He noted that she did not lift her head when a new person entered the house. He also -- quite impressively! -- diagnosed that she was suffering from kidney disease just by observing how her posterior was sunken. We had been medicating and treating N for kidney disease the last 3 years before her demise. Dr. Maizels told us that he performs a Wellness Check "because he has to sleep at night." He is clearly a veterinarian who values the importance of animal lives. Like us, he concluded that it was best to ease N's transition rather than letting her starve to death. There was a moment that really stuck with me. My wife and I were petting N through our glassy eyes and saying our goodbyes. Dr. Maizels took a minute and clasped his hands and closed his eyes. I cannot see into another person's mind, but he was either taking a moment to ponder the significance of N's existence or else he was saying a prayer over her. Either way, the gesture was very much appreciated by us. I had a chance to chat with the other half of this hero tandem, Nurse Patty, when I picked up N's cremated remains. She mentioned how they jump through hoops to fit euthanasias into their schedule as soon as possible because of the gravity of the situation. She also told a tale about one time when she was in the middle of preparing for a Christmas celebration and put everything on hold to drive out and perform end-of-life care. Dr. Patrick Maizels, Nurse Patty, and their Harford Mobile Veterinary Service are clearly focused on the healing and well-being of animals. We asked them for the most unpleasant service -- which they provided with the utmost professionalism -- but I recommend them highly and would use them for any mobile vet service for my dogs. Mike W.
