How to Save Money at VCA Wakefield Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We are so grateful to the VCA Wakefield Animal Hospital. They have taken amazing care of our Maltese as he has grown and helped us ensure he gets the care he deserves and needs. We drive 30-45 minutes just to make the trip to this specific animal hospital for their care and attention details when working with the animals. They don't force anything onto us and provide clear and concise information while offering both sides of the options along with their professional opinions.

I would like to thank Dr. Jackie Potter Furey DVM and staff for their exemplary service in helping to bring good health back to our precious little ones. The entire staff is extremely friendly and supportive with dealing with clients and their pets during uncertain and emotionally stressful situations. My pet Guinea pig ITSOKAY is a 6 year old male who contracted a bacteria leading to an upper respiratory infection and had been sneezing really badly with mucus in his right nostril. Knowing I had an emergency on my hands, at around 3am on a Sunday I googled as many veterinary hospitals I could find and sent out emails and left messages to about 15 different places all around Massachusetts. The VCA WAKEFIELD ANIMAL HOSPITAL was the only place that contacted me that morning a couple hours later. Several contacted me the following day on Monday but, a day too late. I was told there was an opening a few hours later and arrived to a friendly and welcoming staff who immediately put me at ease. Without being seen yet, I already had the feeling I was in good hands. A couple minutes later I was brought into a room and introduced to Dr. Jackie Potter Furey DVM who showed excellent care and provided treatment that led to a diagnosis of an upper respiratory infection. I received antibiotics and pain medication to provide for two weeks orally. They went over the administration protocol for me and made sure I fully understood my responsibilities to help him heal properly. I’ve read numerous articles stating the consultation, physical, treatment, and medication for an upper respiratory infection in a Guinea pig could cost $750-$1,000. Regardless of the veracity of this price range, I was expecting a burdensome bill nonetheless. I was given a coupon to make the initial $135 visit complimentary, the examination, everything was free. My only obligation was to pay a little less than $100 for antibiotics and pain medication. I feel truly blessed to have been contacted immediately during such a dire situation and to have had the opportunity to receive treatment that same day. I would highly recommend using the VCA WAKEFIELD ANIMAL HOSPITAL for their unparalleled service and empathetic staff. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a safe and blessed new year that brings you all into a better and prosperous 2025….

We only go there because of Dr Brenda, She is the best! She has so much medical knowledge of animals! It’s amazing! She is so comfortable to talk with, explains everything to you so you understand what is best for your pet. I have never felt rushed on a visit. Thirteen years, she has never not responded to a message I have left! We travel 25 minutes as she is so worth it!! Also Sam at the Front Desk is the person I always ask for to make an appointment, to get a message to Dr Bouffard, he has the best personality, so helpful, Outstanding at his job!!

Amazing experience overall. Such an attentive, empathetic, and amazing staff. They were able to take care of our cat Cleo as a standby walk-in in the evening after a quick and proactive phone call in the morning addressing some concerns we had. Dr. Couts was phenomenal and extremely knowledgeable. Again, the level of empathy and care was visible when it came to addressing our concerns. Overall, very satisfied with my experience and personally would recommend it to others and would personally take my two cats here for anything else in the future.
