How to Save Money at Foster Hospital for Small Animals
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Tufts FHSA literally saved my dogs life after other vets and another ER couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him. He spent almost 3 weeks admitted at Tufts and all of the vets were great, especially Dr. Allen, Dr. Creamer, Dr. Arango, Dr. Colberg, Dr. Wilcox and all of the amazing techs and staff. We’re so grateful for all of you!!

Tufts saved my dog’s life. My local ER was closed and my next closest option was Tufts. My boy has seizures and they took him back to triage immediately upon our arrival. Dr. Wilson and their team are a true gift, staying until 3:00 am to perform life-saving GVD (bloat) surgery. The entire staff - front desk, vet techs, students and vets - were extremely compassionate and literally wiped away my tears. The genuine love they had for my dog was palpable and I’ll forever be grateful for the high level of care he received.

If I could leave zero stars I would. I was recommended to come to this location due to my dog being seen at the emergency hospital in West Springfield. I was told that this hospital would provide an ultrasound to determine if my dog has swallowed something he was not supposed too. I arrive and they take in my dog, I didn’t hear from a nurse until 2 hours later. Then a provider came to me stating that they did labs and recommended another xray. My referral paperwork stated I needed to get an ultrasound but instead I was told that and xray will be more proficient. I agreed as I have been waiting for about 4 hours now. Two hours later the provider comes back and states that they have not did the xray yet and want to keep him overnight even though my dog was stable and doing fine. It is 10pm and I’m furious, I live an hour away and have been at the vet since 7am. No one came and thought to notify me that my dog still hasn’t received an X-ray hours later. Me and my finance then agreed to take him some place else for an ultrasound. I paid over $500 to wait for 8 hours and receive no ANSWERS. Do NOT come here. They will use up your money!!!!

The ER doctors here have been amazing. They got more members of their team involved to figure out what was ailing my dog and found something incredibly hard to find on ultrasound, which effectively saved his life! This was missed during an ultrasound by another ER facility just 2 days prior. If the team hadn't been so thorough, I can't begin imagine how long we would have been searching for the cause of his symptoms. Very pleased with the care all around.

NEVER BRING A BIRD HERE. Least transparent and trustworthy vet I have ever seen. I understand the idea that it is students at the Tufts school taking care of the animals, but they seem significantly understaffed and mismanaged. Our budgie had a happy life prior to becoming sick of a mystery illness a few days prior. We called an online vet, they told us to make sure she was comfortable and to give her ivermectin. 4 days later she wasn't getting better so we brought her to Tufts because it was the only place open in the area that took birds ASAP. They took my bird back into the clinic and we checked in. An hour later we were brought back to talk about how we did her care. We waited another 3 hours with no information. then they brought us back to talk about a plan. 2,500 for a night in the ICU or 500 for at home care. We couldn't pay 2500, so we had to bring her home. FINALLY she came back out in her carrier, and was limp at the bottom of it. They said it was because they had her injected with subcutaneous fluids (injected with water). My dumb ass believed every word they said. Apparently they are so unorganized they couldn't even keep track of the blanket we brought her bundled on the way there, because they lost it. A grand total of five hours later, we were in the car with 10 days of antibiotics and a dead bird. She was flopping around having a seizure in carrier. PLEASE NEVER GO THERE. READ THE REVIEWS. DON'T RUSH. DON'T DO WHAT WE DID UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER OPTION.
