How to Save Money at Old Derby Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
The Veterinarians, their assistants & the front desk staff are all great. The vet that we see is very kind & will take the time needed to explain anything you might not understand. And while they don't run up the bill with unnecessary procedures it can still put a pretty good dent in your pocket. It's just like anything else that has to do with healthcare (for both people and pets) At the end of the day it's still a business. So make sure you do your due diligence before making any major decisions because things can become very pricey just as any other veterinarians office. But they do work with you to make costs as low as possible along with having payment plans and such. In the end & in my opinion the doctors very trustworthy and very, very good at their jobs. My pup had a really bad reaction to one of the vaccines but the doctor was right on top of the situation. To me my pup just looked a little tired but the doctor saw more and saved her life. I'll edit this w the name of the vaccine and our doctor's name when I get a chance. It's fairly new & has something to do with diseases animals can pick up from rodents & other pests urine. Also we are a few weeks away from getting her neutered so I will have more to share. Long story short & in my 7 months of going there, Old Derby Animal Hospital is worth every penny and I believe they will treat you just as well as they have treated my pup & myself.

I've been bringing my furry family to Old Derby for at least 25 years...probably more! The quality of care is beyond outstanding, as is the compassion of the staff. I wouldn't go anywhere else. My dog has stress related seizures and Dr. Kimball comes out to the car to sedate her a bit if we need to bring her in. Jess, one of the amazing techs, does any necessary blood draws in our car to avoid the stress of bringing Tuukka inside. What other vet does that????

Dr. Devitt is absolutely wonderful! She has been caring for the Labrador puppies I've been raising for Guiding Eyes for the Blind over the past 3 years, and it's so reassuring to know that they're in the best hands! I love the way she communicates with me and appreciate the way she puts the pets at ease and handles them so calmly and gently-she's a true gem!!!

Everyone was so friendly and kind to my dog and my son (and his stuffed animal who received a clean bill of health from two Vets). Dr. Devitt and Nicole were thorough, gentle, kind and gave us clear information. They gave great recommendations but did not pressure me, and I felt the final bill was very fair. I will totally trust the practice with all my animals for future visits!

Dr. Sam Kimble is very empathetic and a good listener. I am thankful for his expert guidance as he and his wife Lisa have a wide range of experience and I know they will do the very best possible for my cat. He makes everything easy to understand! So glad he could see Henry and me.
