How to Save Money at UrgentVet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Yesterday Saturday 3/8 my old black lab Anna (,almost 14 years old) was extremely ill and couldn’t stop vomiting. My vet was out of town. A neighbor told me about Urgent Vet on Dodge Street in Beverly and I was so extremely impressed with their services! I was so desperate for help!! I’m a retired nurse and feel I’m well qualified to evaluate medical service and competency!! It could not have been better at this place. What a great alternative to not having to drive all the way to Woburn for people on the North Shore!!! Linda greeted us warmly and took significant time with me to get a thorough detailed history even though they were busy! She was efficient and pleasant and so helpful. Dr. Duffield was fantastic.. knowledgeable, really caring and competent and made sure I understood everything he said from explaining lab values and their indications to post appointment care. My old girl was treated kindly and compassionately. She has pancreatitis but I feel confident she is receiving the best treatment possible. She’s home with me now and eating and drinking in tiny amounts every 3-4 hours and holding it down. Her diagnostic work up and treatment was really comprehensive. They truly care. I could not recommend worth any more sincerity or enthusiasm. If you get Dr. Duffield and Linda you will be doubly blessed. I rate them a #15 on a 10 point scale. Melody Henderson

If I could leave 100 stars, I would! I called Urgent Vet due to an emergency with my guinea pig. They told me they don’t take exotic pets usually but today they just happened to have a visiting vet in who was able to work with exotic animals. Everyone on staff was so kind and patient with me, they helped to calm me down and they got me into a room immediately when I arrived. My guinea pig, Reese, received the best most thoughtful care and I appreciate the women who were working today so much. They even gave him an award for how cooperative he was during his time here. Usually at an emergency vet visit you expect to lose your entire savings or have to put a loan out on your house, but the pricing here is so reasonable and they were quick to care for him the best way possible. I will definitely be recommending them to any one I know who is a pet owner. I am so lucky Dr. Walsh was there today and I am so grateful for everything she did!

Of course our dog Rosie got sick on a Saturday when our regular vet's office was closed (I think that's some kind of weird natural law). Rosie had Lyme once and the symptoms we were seeing were worrisome: zero energy (so not her), off her food (again, not her), and just not looking good. We used the Urgent Vet webpage to choose a time and headed over. They were great - we didn't have a long wait, the tech was patient, very efficient, and got us settled into a bright and clean exam room. Rosie was running a high fever (not Lyme). The doc did a thorough exam, asked a lot of questions, and was willing to answer ours. We went over various treatment approaches and they gave us enough information so we felt like we could make an educated choice (it worked). We left with everything we needed, and all checkout and treatment information was emailed to us and our vet before we left the parking lot. They are a terrific resource to have nearby in times of need. Note - it IS URGENT care so no overnights, specialists, etc. They will refer if you find you need more than they can handle. The price was also fair. If you don't need a full hospital and have a sick or injured furry friend who needs attention you should give them a try.

Great experience with my dog after he had a massive split in his bail up to the bone. Vet and tech were super warm and informative, and they took great care of my pupp. The facility was also really clean and had fast WiFi for me to get work done while they took care of my dog. Really great to have an emergency vet closer than bulger on the north shore.

Everyone I came across was very friendly and helpful. Dr. Nick and Gloria were so easy to talk to and good with my chihuahua. Very grateful to have this vet clinic so close by for those off hour things that are bound to happen. Especially on long weekends. Pricing very reasonable for an urgent care service. Thankfully my girl just needed some meds for some getting old body pains.
