How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

In and out with medicine and peace of mind. I made an appointment online at 10PM after my kitty injured her eye. Was seen right away and left after 35minutes. $160 for the visit/eye stain/ & meds. I read the other reviews about how they “push” you to buy a care plan but that was never mentioned to me however I do think it’s a great product for younger pets. This appointment was on a Sunday. Compared to other vets, a weekend appointment would have easily cost me triple the cost. Will return if another pet emergency arises.

Premium care on a budget with great hours of operation. I have had banfield through all of my pets and they have always served me well. They offer affordable pet plans to help you take care of your pet. They are always up front and honest with you about pricing and your pet's needs. They definitely love pets and it shows!

This review does not include Cameron (front desk/tech). She was absolutely amazing!! I originally gave an excellent review but after using Banfield on Millerville for 3 months, I am not satisfied at all. I was tricked into the wellness plan that doesn't cover anything- my dog got a rash and I thought the office visit would be covered by her wellness plan....nope! I had to leave the appointment because I couldn't pay an extra $150 on top of the $88/month I pay.(If you read other reviews, you will see a lot of people complaining about the same). There is zero communication amongst the staff. My dog has heartworms and I had several issues on my end and when I would call to get information/advice, I would have to repeat myself to several different people. They don't document anything in their system. Prices are outrageous. Their voicemail is full at all times- meaning they don't check their messages on a daily basis. The vet increased a medication dose and I went to pick it up per the vet's request and had to wait over an hour just for a medication. The wait times for appointments, return phone calls, etc is ridiculous. Very unorganized. The vet was very thorough with explaining heartworm treatment but only gives you one option to treat. Banfield does not do the slow kill process for heartworms and made me feel like a horrible dog mom because I couldn't afford the shots... I rescued my dog and she had heartworms when I got her. It's not like she got heartworms from lack of care from me. Now I am stuck paying $88 for a wellness plan at a vet that my dog is no longer seeing. I also don't like how the animals are kept in crates all day until the vet can see them. That is wrong! My very first appointment, all I could hear was dogs crying the entire time. It was sad. The Banfield website isn't even working for me to download my dogs records! There is always an issue! Dissatisfied is an understatement. So disheartening

I have never been so insulted and let down by a vet. And now, we are stuck with using this horrible service because I was tricked into that wellness plan. Now I'm locked in to a vet that we are EXTREMELY disappointed with. I wished id read the reviews first. DO NOT EVER USE BANFIELD AT MILLERVILLE RD IN BATON ROUGE. THEY ARE THE ABSOLUTE WORST on customer service and how to treat owners of pets facing major crisis. They are a sales company more interested in pushing plans to people who can't afford them. Then treat the customer as if they are beneath them. I was told the only time the vet could talk to me was 5pm to 6pm. I work in ER .. at 5-6pm I am at front desk arriving emergency patients. I cannot take calls at night while at work. After being told how important the vets time is and that's the only time she could talk to me .. and being told my job is not as important as hers. I want out but thanks to the $86 a month you tricked me into (I only signed contract for lower program but you verbally told me it wasnt good enough and tricked me into the higher price for the care my baby would need. And now I find out it doesn't even cover that care. Your service for this treatment is $500 higher even with that plan than all the other areas vets without any plan or ins.. But now you have me locked into the plan so I can't afford so I can't afford to go to a good vet who would be polite, more thoughtful and cheaper. I especially do not like that we can't go with our boy to his visits. We have to drop off and pick up much later meaning he's in a cage all day. I'm telling the world to stay away. Go to a local vet who truly cares about your pet and you. Not just the Almighty sales ploy.

Absolutely awful. Offered a trim for cat and they borderline declawed him. They went way past the pink quick which is equivalent to ripping out someone’s fingernails. Cat has been having issues with accepting liquid medications and when asked to switch to capsules which are both available options for the medications he’s taking they dance around it as if it’s a difficult task to go fill a damn prescription. Overall rushed experience. Do not recommend using a corporate “vet” for your source of pet care, especially one inside of a corporate pet store such at PetSmart who is notorious for providing low quality conditions for the animals they are selling, as well as spreading blatant misinformation about the care needed for said animals in order to sell more. They also get their animals from mills. If you want adequate and high quality service, go to a local vet clinic such as Azalea or Sherwood, where money isn’t their main priority. EDIT: their “insurance” is also an absolute scam.
