How to Save Money at VetCheck Pet Urgent Care Center - Fishers IN

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Out regular vet was closed so I took Jarvis in because he was having seizures. He had never had them before so it was beyond scary. The staff was friendly and very kind to Jarvis and me but, more importantly, Dr. Siwa was good with Jarvis. He examined Jarvis and, in detail, explained the diagnosis and treatment plan. Yes, as others have said, it was quite expensive. With that said, one of the staff provided the cost analysis every step of the way and I could have declined any of the diagnosis procedures, as well as the any of the treatment options. Jarvis is my family and I wanted him to be well so I decided that other expenses would have to wait - Jarvis was my priority. I didn't want him to continue having seizures. They also called the next day to see how Jarvis was doing. I wouldn't hesitate to take Jarvis back, should the need arise.

Storyabout Mosquitoes

They were extremely prompt and kind in dealing with me despite the fact that I was a mess bringing in my cat. She had an infection after getting spayed elsewhere (not that it is the other vets fault but they were not open). They looked her over and did tests immediately and gave her antibiotics and pain killers. She is happy and affectionate again now.

We took our dog here for what seemed to us to be a pretty deep cough (which was easily diagnosed by our regular vet the next day as kennel cough). We've never had a dog get it before so we were concerned the dog might have something lodged in his throat. We knew to expect "premium prices" to get an answer immediately, but this place took the cake. The "veterinarian" on duty was absurd. He looked at our dog for less than 30 seconds, asked us no questions, then left the room and recommended $800 in diagnostics... including a test for pancreatitis? We declined the blood work and pancreatitis tests and went with just an X-ray to verify there was nothing obstructing his throat. After verifying that there was no obstruction, the "vet" recommended an additional $1,000 in "services" including $300 for canine cough drops, $225 for antibiotics, $80 for an anti-nausea shot (our dog wasn't nauseous), $140 for an IV, and $300 to send the X-ray to a radiologist for further review. We passed on all their additional offerings but they made us sign an AMA form stating that we were going "Against Medical Advice" before they'd cash us out so we could leave. This is the first vet I've ever seen that didn't seem to care for animals (or their people) at all, he was entirely cold and dismissive. If your dog is in peril, I'd recommend waiting for your regular vet to be open or keep on driving down the road to someplace less scummy... this place is a scam palace setup to exploit concerned pet parents.

We needed emergency stitches on our very anxious and reactive dog. The staff at VetCheck were extremely accommodating to our specific needs to keep our dog from reacting at them. We were given time to calm our dog and keep our hand on her until the sedative fully kicked in. Other ER vets have not been so gracious in the past. While the operation was more expensive than what our normal vet would charge, you have to keep in mind that this is still an ER vet and the care they provide is top notch. I would not hesitate to recommend Vet Check to anyone in the same situation. I hope that we don't need to visit another ER vet, but if we do it will be VetCheck.
