How to Save Money at Wauconda Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I wish I could give them 10 Stars! After a very bad experience with our new puppy her first visit at another vet clinic, we decided to give this place a try. I can't begin to say how happy I am that we did. Every single staff member was kind and friendly. Huge shout out to our vet tech Caite. She was amazing!! Bubbly personality, extremely knowledgeable and very patient with all of my questions. Dr. Numbers was equally impressive. Kind, patient, knowledgeable and took her time with the exam and answering questions. We will continue to bring our Little Newt here for her care! Can't thank all of you enough for such a pleasant first visit 😊

From the moment I walk in the door with my pup Lady to the time we leave, everyone takes great care. We always greeted at the front desk with smiles and helpful assistance. The vet techs are so loving to Lady and she is instantly put at ease when getting shots or her nails trimmed. The vet really listens to my concerns and takes the time to answer all my questions without making me feel like we are being rushed.

I used to be pretty happy with this place. I've taken my dog here for years, and have not had any issues per se. Not happy at all today. My call was made on Monday July 3rd. And yes I know it was one day before the holiday. First I asked if I could get my dog in, and was told that they had no openings. That was fine however, my dog was in severe pain from an ear infection, and I have gotten medicine before here. The girl that answered the phone told me that one of the techs would get back to me. They did not. My dog still suffers. That's not acceptable to me. Either this place is horribly managed, or I was lied to. Neither one of those scenarios is very comforting.

The practice itself is amazing but unfortunately many of the front desk staff have taken it upon themselves to treat clients as they wish and refuse to help get them to proper management when handling a concern with the proper people involved instead choosing to insert themselves personally in the situation. Aside from today's conversation when I requested specifically to speak to someone in management or a supervisor and the front desk staff decided that was not going to happen and instead pretend to be the one who will determine the situation and where blame will be pointed instead I had a single situation that arose with yet another front desk staff over 6 months ago when I was in a extremely difficult time of losing my cat. Now during an accidental renewal for my pet's medication by Chewys system I was told yet again from someone at your front desk to take my pet elsewhere "since I am unhappy with the clinics service's" Which couldn't be any further from the truth. I LOVE the clinic just not your rude front desk staff who chooses to treat your clients this way.
