How to Save Money at Scout Veterinary Urgent Care - Old Orchard

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so grateful to the team at Scout. They have come through for us on two occasions now. Our mischievous lab has given us some scares and they have helped bring her back to health when our vet was not available. The reports are incredibly thorough. The team is caring, patient, and takes the time to follow up. Misiu and I thank you all so very much!

Dr. Simpson was amazing in her explanation of treatment plan for my dog. The staff was great in making my dog comfortable in a strange place. I love the idea of an Immediate care for animals and it worked very well for me. I would recommend Scout for those immediate care needs for their cats or dogs.

I am brand new to the Chicagoland area and I was referred to Scout (by my dog’s new primary vet) for an acute urinary issue and WOW are they amazing! The staff was all so kind and patient. The vet we worked with (Dr. Rivera) was 👏out 👏of 👏this👏world👏INCREDIBLE 👏 My dog is quite shy and nervous in her senior years and Dr. Rivera picked up on it immediately and moved slowly, confidently, and calmly and did all the right things to gain my dog’s trust. Not to mention they were deeply knowledgeable and took the time to explain things in a way I could understand. This is the first time that a veterinarian has made me feel like we were working collaboratively to care for my dog, rather than just being told what to do. I cannot recommend Scout enough - your fur baby will be in great hands!

I am new to Chicago, we just moved about a year ago and I had yet to find a primary vet for my cat when an incident occurred where he had an injury. I’ve had him since he was a kitten and I naturally got so scared and found this place to go to. I’m so happy that I came here, I’m a college student with a part time job and they communicated every cost, every step of the way. They were great with him and they even gave him treats while he was back there to calm him down. They were able to treat him and gave us a list of cost efficient places to go to and some cat toys on top of everything else. It’s an urgent care, so prices are a little more than a normal vet naturally, but I definitely recommend if there’s an issue going on with your animal.

Our tuxedo cat had a history of allergies before and we went into SCOUT for an urgent appointment because our little guy was so itchy he was scratching his neck raw. The entire process was very easy. From start to finish we were able to make an appointment the next day. When arriving we saw Dr. Pop and her very friendly staff. Everything was explained very simply and all the details were checked.Wr went home with medications and cleae instructions. They also printed out local vet places for us to visit for aftercare. I am so happy to have SCOUT so close to us for any urgent visits in the future. Thank you to the very kind staff and Dr. Pop for taking care of our fur baby. ❤️
