How to Save Money at Prairie Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is Delores. My girl! I wouldn't take her anywhere else. They are very knowledgeable. They treat their patients with respect & kindness. You can tell the difference when you step in, are greeted by the front desk with smiles & professionalism. Every animal I ever own from now on will be a customer here. You are doing your animal a disservice if you don't use PAH as your main vet. Dr. Kuhn-Siegel is professional and very passionate about her career. I can tell that she truly cares for her animals.

Dr. Kuhn is awesome. Very knowledgeable and good at explaining everything to you. She’s also got a fun personality and has a good sense of humor. They’re thorough and easy to schedule. I’m very confident with the care both my kitties receive when they’re here.

We took our puppy in twice. Initially we thought it could just be a one-off experience that we had. We were told that our dog was not a yorkie because of his coloring, when I infact had ALL of his papers in my hand as we had JUST brought him home. Our Doctor mentioned that “he doesn’t have the proper coloring to be American Kennel Club recognized.” and that “yorkies don’t look like that”. Firstly, I do not care, he will not be bred nor will he be a show dog. Secondly, he IS a parti yorkie, which is American Kennel Club recognized… so whatever. Thirdly, this vet trip was before his first haircut so he looked more like a miscellaneous dog than a yorkie. I digress, we were told he has an overbite (we got a second opinion, he doesn’t have an overbite.) We had a premium plan pushed on us which is so beyond ridiculous when we already have quality pet insurance. We got home from the first visit and we discovered we were given EXPIRED (BY A YEAR, NOT THE DATE OF PRODUCTION) FLEA AND TICK MEDS FOR DOGS OVER 6 POUNDS AND 6 MONTHS. During the time of visit he was 3.6 pounds and WELL below six months of age. I am not a doctor but still… Our dog already had another appointment scheduled and so I figured as a very anxious pet-parent that maybe somehow we just were too harsh and to give it another go. We were absolutely WRONG to do so. This time around we had a different assistant come in and hold our dog loosely and carelessly and thus causing the vet (id like to emphasize it was not the vets fault) to stab around our puppy to give him his vaccines. Our dog was in extreme discomfort on this trip and does not usually have such reactions to touch or getting his shots. I received a test message the following day asking if our dog had had any “reactions” to his shots, which is a text we did not receive the first time and immediately caused my husband and i concern. I have held off on this review for so long because the thought of taking away from someone else’s livelihood that works at this vet is sickening… but for the sake of YOUR animals and your piece of mind… please go somewhere else. This vet does have some VERY sweet people working there but it’s just a resounding no in terms of healthcare.

I can not give this clinic enough praise. One of the best experiences I've had at a vet clinic despite the dire circumstances of a sick pet. You can tell they really love what they do! And have a passion for helping people and their pets. Not only did they save my puppy's life, they went above and beyond to provide the upmost care for my pup. They were extremely nice, knowledgeable and helpful. Giving me several updates. When we went back for a check up, my normally shy border collie was so excited to see them! They have definitely earned my respect and trust. I cannot thank everyone there enough for the great service they provided. Without you, my pup my not be here today

Dr Kuhn is awesome!! She saved Skeeter’s life three times. She diagnosed him with diabetes and got him on the correct medicines to give him three more quality years of life. Then came Jasper and they have a special bond from the day I picked him up to now. Erin is hands down the best groomer!! Doggy daycare is Jasper’s favorite! Now, Jazzie who is a typical tortie is not good with anyone but her brother Jasper or momma but thinks Doc is ok. Dr Kuhn goes above and beyond the call of duty. She was able to stitch Jasper’s paw up quickly in an emergency. When, he let out a blood curdling Yelp, she got him in right away to diagnose him with a crucial cranial torn ligament. Do not hesitate to bring your fur children here!!
