How to Save Money at Ottawa Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Wonderful !!! Best vet and staff ever !!! My peanut was very ill. I tried all the at home remedies to fix her condition , but nothing worked. After 24 hours of not eating or drinking and vomiting I called them . They told me over the phone what was wrong and allowed me to bring her in the next morning. She needed emergency surgery. Long story short she made it through 🙏🏼 The vet came in the waiting area sat down next to me and thoroughly explained everything !! I highly endorse, if you love your pet and want to save money this is the place to go !!! Amazing !!!

DONT EVER take your animal there for an emergency they killed my dog and tried lying about it over the phone. I took my dog there as an emergency all they did was give him a pain shot they said they were going to take her as an emergency they told me they will call me to come get her before they closed they never did cause they didn’t check my dog at all. I never gave my permission to keep my dog over night they were going to call me when they fixed her I called all the way up to closing time they still said they will call me and they did not I called the next morning and the receptionist went to check on her and told me she was resting but within 5 minutes the dr called me back and said she passed overnight but they never checked or saved her life as an emergency cause there were other ones also and I was the 2nd person there with my dog for an emergency they did nothing didn’t check her out or anything they kept her in a kennel all night and all she got was that one pain shot. So I asked to have her creamated and they said fine but it was $190 to get her creamated I went and borrowed the money cause I’m low income they then told me cause they kept her all night without my permission so I had to pay another $189 and I said I didn’t approve them to keep her all night and they didn’t even try to help her and when I took her in that was a major emergency and they let her die and now they put the $189 in collections and which put my credit down 49points so as I said NEVER take your pet there cause they don’t try to even save them! Plus it smells really bad there and they have sick cats all over the office.

Since they took down my last review :) They murder animals consistently, as someone who worked there and had to quit because of how awful they treat their staff and due to them literally locking animals in rooms and refusing to let anyone take care of them while they defecate and urinate all over themselves. This place makes me sick. The owners also have repeatedly stolen donations, including cash. I can't believe it's not shut down.

WARNING; DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU LOVE YOUR PET AT ALL. We recently had to put down our dearly loved cat, and unfortunately, we were very tight financially because it came out of nowhere, so we reluctantly came here for the services they provided. That was the biggest mistake. To say they were awful was an understatement. They took us back, put us in the room, and left. After waiting a bit, the vet came in and asked why we were putting him down. We explained, and she just injected him, no warning nor anything. We didn't even get to say our last goodbye before he was gone. She left and said, "Take the time we need." Then, as we were going to pay, the girls up at the counter were overly pushy on us taking a kitten home. After saying no OVER a DOZEN TIMES, they still tried to get us to take a kitten. Even if we wanted a new baby, those poor kitties looked so sick and unhealthy. But common sense, you don't push a family who just lost their pet to take a kitten. That's beyond inconsiderate and wrong.

We just took our elderly dog thinking it was his end of his journey. Dr H treated him with kindness and compassion and gave us an alternative treatment. He is responding well. We are so grateful for your never-ending care and love for all of our family. We are beyond grateful
