How to Save Money at The Cat Practice

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We've brought our cats here since the late 1990s and have been thrilled to have a vet that specializes in cats. We have owned two that lived 20+ years as well as others that thrived despite diabetes, kidney problems, hyperthyroid under care at The Cat Practice.

First time coming here with my new kitten and I couldn't be more happy! I literally spent a hour asking questions and getting advice and everyone was so helpful. They made me really feel like they cared about my kitten and are not just an assembly line place just looking to get you in and out.

They have a wonderful caring staff, and with the very experienced veterinarian Dr Lori. I always feel confident, bringing our cat’s to The Cat Practice as well as referring other people.

I am beyond grateful for the help support and team work at this clinic. I came in crisis after my 18 year old FIV+ cat, Squishy, fell off a chair and is now paralyzed in her hind limbs. My regular vet could not help us navigate these new mobility challenges outside of suggesting we have a "quality of life" talk. Rachele, vet tech supervisor, set up a block of time where I could meet in-person to be educated and practice how to work out and through these new challenges. This was a relaxed conversation. Rachele gave me the space and time to absorb and practice what she was teaching. I didn't feel like I was being rushed, and for the first time in the two weeks since the accident I was able to breath. When I had more questions I was able to get another appointment the following day. My mistake was not taking Squishy to a cat only clinic sooner. Standard visit services at Oak Park Cat Practice include nail trimming and gland expressing! What!?! How many years have I taken my cats to other clinics and that never happens. Initially I only had a Tech appointment with Rachele. However, Rachele could see that Squishy needed to see Dr. Lori, and the team figured out how to make that happen. TMI maybe - Squishy had a raging UTI, despite being at another popular vet just the day before and having an invasive cytocentisis done, without my consent, the "other" vet didn't notice. I was hoping we could collect a urine sample without having to do a cytocentisis. Rachele and Dr. Lori understood my concerns and put Squishy's needs and comfort front and center. They didn't do a cyto and were able to collect a sample, diagnose, and get her treated. From the moment I walked into the clinic I was greeted by Adrienne. There is a genuine sense of kindness and compassion alive in this clinic. The walls are covered in beautiful memorials to cats that are no longer with us physically. I didn't need to drug Squishy to be examined here. Dr. Lori, Rachele, and the team were so respectful to Squishy, giving her time to feel safe and comfortable. Squishy even laid her head on Rachele! At home Squishy is the most lovable cat, at the vet...I don't know what happens...but some how she becomes a portal for demons, even with gabapentin to dope her up. This didn't happen, she was so calm at The Oak Park Cat Practice. I live in Lombard and was going to a popular vet Hospital closer to home. Now, I gladly make the 30 minute trip to see Dr. Lori Rachele Adrienne and team. Their attentive compassionate care actually saves me hours of time I was otherwise spending worrying and calling my old vet. Thank you Oak Park Cat Practice!!! Thank you Dr. Lori, Thank you Rachele, Thank you Adrienne (sorry I am probably misspelling your name). Justin
