How to Save Money at VelVet Surgical Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Thank you Dr. Nick for saving the life of our furry family member! Ellington is doing great because of you and our family is grateful for your expertise, care, and compassion for our little "Duke". My son has a variety of challenges and Ellington is his constant companion. Ellington had urinary blockages THREE TIMES during his 3 years on this planet and we were devastated every time it happened because we were so afraid we'd lose him. The third time you worked your magic with all of your expertise and skills and now Ellington is happy and healthy and his usual wonderful kitty self! Words really can't express our gratitude, but a very sincere THANK YOU from our family to you!

Dr. Nick is fantastic! He has been coming to the practice I work for in Naperville for many years to perform most of our orthopedic surgeries. He is reliable, knowledgeable, and thorough. I would not hesitate to have him work on any of my own animals (and he has in fact!), and am always recommending him to others!

Dr.Nick is beyond amazing he helped me and my boy when no one else would!!!!!!! My dog is a year and a half old and had a chronic ear issue that was causing open sores and his great pain.... after many visits and different attempts to heal his ear sores my regular vet suggested I find someone to do a corrective surgery which would b an ear cropping so he wont have the sores no more.... I called everywhere and no one was willing to do his surgery until I found Dr.Nick and I feel he instantly took me seriously that I wasn't just looking for a cosmetic surgery my boy was in pain and I just needed someone to help him... a week after his visit with regular vet that suggested I find someone... here I sit with my boy recovering from his surgery... not only was Dr. Nick able to help him.... I was expecting him to have no ear left.... but he made his ears look soo amazing I will post pics once healed.... he looks like he got them done like it was planned like a puppy would.... I am sooo happy with Dr. Nick's willingness to help us and he also did a beautiful job on making his ears look good.... thank u sooooo much from the bottom of my heart for helping my boy when no one else would!!!!!!💕💕💕

My name is D. Cerny and I am a K-9 Officer with the Rockville Police Department. On 10-22-20 my police K-9 Jax was struck by a vehicle (in which the driver did not stop). Jax suffered a completely fractured rear left leg just below the knee. Jax is an almost 2 year old Belgian Malinois. After taking Jax to our local Vet Hospital in Terre Haute, they advised he would need to go to Indianapolis for surgery. However, thru a close family member in Cedar Lake, I learned of Dr. Nick Velkov. Dr. Velkov was contacted and he reviewed Jax’s notes and X-rays. Dr. Velkov immediately set up surgery for Jax on Saturday 10-24-20 first thing in the morning. Hanover Vet Hospital provided the surgical space and professional medical staff. As you can imagine I was very worried for my K-9 partner. Dr. Velkov calmed all my fears and told me that he would take care of Jax and he would be back to normal after his recovery period. On Saturday morning Dr. Velkov successfully completed Jax’s surgery and re-constructed his leg with surgical hardware he had on hand and immediately available to Jax. There was no waiting for anything. Dr. Velkov came in that morning determined and prepared for everything. It should be noted that I later discovered that Dr. Velkov had family plans that morning, which he put on hold for the medical needs of my K-9 partner. Jax is now in recovery, which will be a six to eight week process and he will then be able to return to full duty. As you can imagine Jax is not just a police K-9 but also a family member to me. We are together 24/7 on duty or off duty. So his safety was my number one priority. After learning of and speaking to Dr. Velkov, I knew right away he was the only surgeon I was going to let treat my partner Jax. I owe a great deal of gratitude to Dr. Velkov and the Hanover Vet Clinic for what the did for Jax and myself. They all made me feel as if Jax was a member of their family. Again, from the bottom of my heart I thank Dr. Velkov and the staff and Hanover Vet Hospital for the job that they did and compassion they provided. Without a doubt, should the need arise for our pet family members or K-9 Jax to need medical or surgical intervention, I will not hesitate to call upon Dr. Nick Velkov or the Hanover Vet Hospital. Many Thanks, Officer D. Cerny and K-9 Jax Rockville Police Department, IN ~ Always Believe
