How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Nokomis Veterinary Service

Preventive care

Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Getting to Know Your Veterinarian

Choosing a veterinarian is an important decision for pet parents. A strong vet relationship is built on trust, communication, and understanding your pet’s individual needs.

Experience

Ask whether the clinic has experience treating your specific type of pet, since care can vary between dogs, cats, and pocket pets.

Emergency Care Procedures

It’s helpful to understand how the clinic handles after-hours emergencies, including whether they provide emergency services or refer to nearby emergency hospitals.

Communication Preferences

Ask how the clinic communicates with pet parents, including updates, test results, and follow up questions.

Breed Specific Health Considerations

Some breeds may be more prone to certain health conditions. Early awareness can help with prevention and early treatment.

Facility Tour

If available, touring the clinic can help you and your pet feel more comfortable before the first visit.

It is so sad that we do not have a good livestock vet in our area. Heaven forbid something terrible happens and you need a vet because they will not come out. Since they took over after Dr. Lacey we have had nothing but bad experiences. First one being with our daughters horse, then a few calves after that. If you are looking for needing a large animal vet and the option of farm calls look elsewhere! As far as family pets again look elsewhere, recently a friend took their family pet there and had a horrible experience and based off the facebook post so did over 80+ other people, and after she made it public and tagged them in the post she was quickly blocked. So so sad for all the pet and livestock owners in our community!

Our two fur-babies each had a surgery within a month recently. The entire staff was very friendly, helpful and took extra time to ease our anxieties answering all of our questions genuinely. The office even sets up occasion specific photo stands for their furry patients and gives each one special attention as if it was their own.

They have been wonderful with my miniature schnauzer. He has very high energy and some anxiety, and all the staff have been amazing with him! The groomer Ashley does great work, and is fantastic with the animals. It's great to have such a wonderful vet clinic locally.
