How to Save Money at VCA Naper Ridge Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

At this time of my life, we have 2 young cats and a puppy. Four months ago we had two young cats and a senior dog. I’ve been going to VCA Naper Ridge for a few years ever since our last vet retired and I wasn’t comfortable with a few other places we visited before settling on VCA. I can’t recommend this vet highly enough. My animals have visited every one of the vets on staff and my senior dog used to be groomed by Nora as well. I’ll always be grateful for how my dog’s end of life care was handled by Dr. Demers. The bottom line is that every time I leave, I feel so happy and relieved that I go here. My puppy will be spayed soon and having the Care Club to make it workable to do it at VCA rather than free down near Joliet removed a tremendous amount of anxiety that I’d been having. Once again, I can’t recommend this vet highly enough.

While the technicians and everyone we’ve encountered has been pleasant at this location, unfortunately the actual doctor, couldn’t really have been worse. We took our 13 year old cat to this location, which we’ve been going to for years and have never had a problem, and had never seen this doctor before. Clearly he’s old, but he was breathing a little funky. He was okay, just wanted to get him checked on…. This man basically told us he was in respiratory distress and to put him down. He was ready to put him down then and there. Barely looked at him, took a quick listen, and wanted to kill him off.. I found it kind of funny actually. Because I write this about two years later with that same cat draped over my lap. Still breathing funny, by the way. Unfortunately I don’t have the doctors name because he failed to introduce himself, but sadly we haven’t returned to that vet. Which really is unfortunate because we truly did have several great experiences and tragic losses in that building. But had I trusted his opinion I couldn’t lost my perfectly fine pet…

We called to schedule a spay and they said they have no record of my puppy’s name after we she had been seen a couple months ago. They also were very rude and accusatory towards our puppy’s condition in that initial visit. We had only had her for 7 days at that point and she came to us as a foster rescue from Kentucky in some rougher condition which we were working on resolving. This place is unorganized (no records or documentation from the the initial visit) and unprofessional. Very unacceptable and displeased. Save yourself a headache and the gas lighting and go to the Aurora location or different vet. I wish I could rate 0 stars.

Dr. Demers is the best. We drive 10 miles to come to this location. Instead of another facility she worked at a mile from our house. She gave wonderful end of life care to our dog we lost in 2018. Now she cares for our new family member we've had for the last 5 years.

I have never been to this vet but after reading about the team and finding out that the hospital manager Alicia, having special place for german shepherds just made me so happy. I love and have special place for german shepherds as well and trying to find a veterinarian that has the same passion for the breed like I do is extremely rare! I have no problem driving far to have my German shepherd meet Alicia and get established in the future :)
