How to Save Money at McHenry Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I want to thank Dr. Green for taking such great care of Miss Cleo. I have never had her come back from her Doctor appointments in a good mood as she has today. Isn't that what counts? Dr. Green was also very patient with me. With all this crazy stuff going on now she took extra time to come out to me in my car to share her findings.

My number 1 choice for vets. I've been taking my pets to McHenry Pet Hospital for years. My dog's health is extremely important to me, and I cannot understate how much I appreciate McHenry Pet Hospital employees always answering my questions thoroughly and knowledgably. I've called a few times with questions, and they are always helpful. When I bring my dog in for her yearly checkup, they give me excellent advise without pressuring me. I will be a returning customer for years to come.

Huge thank you to Dr Green and her absolutely amazing staff for our first visit. My newly rescued dog is terrified of everyone and everything because of where she came from so everyone at the clinic was super patient with us. The entire staff is very knowledgeable, caring and ready to help with anything and anytime.

Two Weeks ago I had to put my dog Toby down. It was so very heart breaking for me. The appointment was with Dr. Toma (I believe that is how to spell her name) whom I'm not too familiar with as we've always seen Dr. Green all the years we have gone there but I was desperate so I took the appointment. It was all they had. I was so relieved to see Dr. Green walk in to do to the procedure. I feel like she knew him best and I feel like her words to me meant more than any words from a vet that never seen him would have. She explained everything she was doing and I really believe she knew just how much I/we love our animals. Her level of care towards animals is one I've never seen before in a veterinarian. They are a great vet. Often busy but absolutely great!!!!!

We had to put our dog "Baby" to sleep and they were so kind, professional, gentle and overall amazing. I'll never forget how they treated my family and Baby when it was time. We couldn't afford the sand paw print thing they offered which we were ok with. Less than a week later, we got a condolences card with the paw prints in paint. I cannot tell you what that meant to me. It made me feel so close to my baby girl. It meant everything. I cannot put into words what that meant to me to receive such a heartfelt gift. Wow. I will forever, forever love them and recommend them. They made me feel ok leaving her there after she passed. That was really hard for us. They gave us the privacy and time we needed to say goodbye and I'll never forget that. It was the was she deserved to go. With love and dignity. That's what she got. She was such an amazing dog to our family. She deserved the best and the best she got here. Thank you! Jill,- "Baby's" mama.
