How to Save Money at Gilberts Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Stone is a very through doctor. She will take time to talk with you and answer all of your questions. I like that the office calls back and checks up on your pet to see how he/she is doing. And I never had to wait long at all to be seen on in the office.

I write this review with a heavy heart as my pup has recently crossed over the rainbow bridge. I took my dog here for several years and never had any complaints. Unfortunately, that changed when I brought her in for her vaccines and concerning symptoms. The vet had misread my dog's X-rays and bloodwork and diagnosed her with heart disease. He started her on 3 cardiac medications and later said she had an infection and started her on antibiotics. TWO WEEKS later I urgently brought her in where Dr. Stone took X-rays and identified a bleeding splenic mass which was the reason for her symptoms at her previous appointment. I then transferred her to an emergency room which resulted in $14,000 in life saving surgery and treatment. Had she not been misdiagnosed here, she could have received routine treatment instead of emergent surgery. My dog's symptoms during the first visit were due to her body compensating for her bleeding. The cardiac medications worsened her status and resulted in kidney failure. After requesting and reviewing the bloodwork from Gilberts Animal Clinic myself after her hospitalization, it was extremely obvious that the results indicated my dog was bleeding internally. Upon speaking with Dr. Stover (the owner) about this situation, I was told that the vet misread the X-rays because they are a newer technology that he has not worked with yet. She was very compassionate and apologetic and listened to my concerns which I do appreciate. However, a simple I'm sorry does not make up for a vet's ignorance and misdiagnosis. There were never any attempts to discount future services I received with them such as post-op blood work, and visits, or to refund me for services that were misread despite spending $14,000 in emergency treatment due to their vet's mistakes. While I appreciate Dr. Stone, who had treated my dog several times prior, and the reason my dog was able to receive emergency surgery, and Dr. Stover, for her kindness, I cannot recommend that anyone brings their pet to a clinic where a vet can misdiagnose such an obvious and serious condition.

My dogs and I are now clients for life! Dr. Stone is so kind and understanding and she listens and answers questions. There is no rush and their fees are reasonable and affordable. And the girls at the front desk are very nice and very helpful, as well. I feel blessed to have found this office and I understand why they are top rated and why many people in these ratings say that they even travel quite a bit to bring their pets here. I only wish that I had found them sooner but now that I have, I will never leave. A good Vet is everything when your fur babies are sick. I've been sooo sad... And while I know my doggy is getting old and her health may be seriously starting to slip, at least I can feel good in my heart and soul that I am giving her the very best care that I possibly can. And so today, I can feel a bit better. Thank you again, Dr. Stone and office. ❤
