How to Save Money at Flossmoor Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve been bringing my dog here since I adopted him 5 years ago and have to say it has gotten worse every year. We are moving out of state in a few weeks and I decided with his vet’s recommendation to have his eye removed due to glaucoma. There were no instructions given for pre-op other than no food after 8 pm. I currently live over an hour away and still decided to go here for the surgery because he is known here. I picked him up and there was no post-op care given either other than give him his medication every 12 hours. 2 days post op, his eye was bleeding severely and draining. I called and they asked if I could be there within the hour but that wasn’t possible because we live further than an hour away. I made an appointment for 3:30 and still went down to the office to see if they could get him in earlier and I had my own doc appt that day at 1:30. They called when I was 5 min away and said the doc wanted to push my appointment to 4:30 because she had another patient. I expressed my concerns and they did not care. I walked in to ask if someone could help me clean his face because I didn’t know what to do with all the blood and mucus everywhere until he was seen. No one came out to at least give instruction but the front desk was nice enough to give me some towels and told me where the bathroom was. I cleaned up his face and we left and stayed in the area until it was time for him to be seen. Doc didn’t even examine him, she just looked at him from her seat and told me everything was normal but apologized about the miscommunication with the front desk and making me commute. It’s currently Sunday, 4 days post op and his eye is so swollen it looks like there is a golf ball inside. They are closed today, I called and requested their after hours line to have her call in a prescription for antibiotic and was told that wasn’t possible today. I left it alone and emailed the request. It’s currently midnight and his eye started bleeding from the area that is swollen where no surgery was done. I called emergency vet near me and was told that if he needs an eye specialist there is nothing that can be done until morning and to be checked in before seeing a doc for general assistance the fee was $249. After just paying for a $1500 surgery while in the process of moving out of state they have put me in a very difficult situation, emotionally and financially. DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE TRUSTING PEOPLE THAT DONT CARE ABOUT THE WELL BEING OF YOUR PET.

For me and my pets they have been the best for nearly 30 years! Many dogs, a few cats and a turtle! Boarding, grooming and dealing with elder pets, they have always been compassionate, accommodating and professional.

2 vet appointments and 1week boarding didn’t go as planned. 1st appointment, I asked for a quote prior to coming. I was told my bill/vaccines would be between $108-118, it was $194. 2nd appointment my pup vaccinations were performed out of sight, in a secluded area which was different that 1st visit where the vaccine was given in sight. Nevertheless, decided to use them for boarding while I vacationed for a week. I asked for extra pampering twice a day which cost $5 for each 10 minute session. Upon pickup today I find out, they didn’t do it. Therefore, he’s been caged for a week except for a potty break. I also didn’t get a response when I asked how was my pup doing in their chat portal. Now I have to go back and pick up a toy they forgot to give back which leads me to believe he wasn’t allowed to play with it while caged. 3 strikes and you’re out!

So thankful for this clinic, the doctors, and techs. My 4 month old puppy was in a lot of pain and puking, so they graciously squeezed her in and performed emergency surgery on her that day. Dr. Frizzell took such good care of her and helped put me at ease in an overwhelming situation. So thankful to this team for saving my baby!

Flossmoor Animal Hospital has to be one of the greatest animal clinics I've ever been to. It is clean to the point of perfection. I found the building to be extremely modern. On the service side, I could not give enough credit to everyone. From the front desk all the way to the back office, everyone was extremely nice, hospitable, and professional. My dog has a severe case of epilepsy, and the doctor was kind enough to break down how everything worked, coming up with a plan that best suits my dog without trying to go overkill and stack me up with fees, which is what Markham Animal Clinic(now moved and called Homewood Animal Clinic) had been doing to us for almost ten years. I could not sing enough high praise to Flossmoor Animal Hospital. Bless all of you for all the work you do! 10/10
