How to Save Money at Elgin Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. D & his staff are so compassionate and provide exceptional care. I love that they support animal rescue groups too.

I have been bringing both of my dogs here for the past 2 years. Overall, the experience has been good. My dog has been put under anesthesia twice here and the staff has been so caring/sweet. The only reason I gave it four stars is because they are always booked out over a month in advance.

This might be a long one but it’s worth it. I had my kitten Oliver get neutered here around April ish I’m not sure when to be honest. Simple easy and everyone was super nice. He wasn’t due for his vaccinations until August and when I got my new Kitten Nova I was going to go back and kill two birds with one stone when he was ready and when she was older to get spayed. Until then, out of sight out of mind. Unfortunately my Ollie passed away last month. It was at an over night at a completely different facility and I didn’t think that the news would get back to them. Tonight I saw that they sent a letter with hand written notes and my heart melted. I know it was a moment they took to send that kind of love and to be honest with so much going on around me it was nice to remember that he had always been surrounded by love in more places than his home. It was a simple thing on their end but to think that even though that they were a back of my head thing, they definitely have love. I’m going back with my Nova Bean and I’m super grateful for them to help me remember the love in Ollie’s life. Thank you so much to you all 🤍

They quoted me a price to get my dog fixed. When I got there for the check in, I asked about pre-anesthesia blood work (pretty standard) and they responded "oh. Do you want to add that?" They weren't even going to bring it up! That is how you know the dog isn't going to have an adverse reaction. It was an extra fee for that. It was an extra fee for IV fluids (even though they said it would help her feel better sooner). They were very passive about the process. When I picked her up, the cone that I paid for through them was entirely too big. It was too loose and too long and she didn't have the height to carry it. She was still bleeding from the incision, which they did not mention, and the incision looked shotty at best. She had one part of it that took way longer to heal because it didn't look like they lined her skin back up right and there was just extra at one end. Never going back here. It was awful and stressful and I think it's shady that they are cutting corners that should be included and then charging extra for them. If people don't know to ask for these things, they might end up having awful effects on their pets because of non-transparency.

Am I the only one who feels the doctor here does not care about your pet? The times I’ve gone in has been completely horrendous, they don’t have enough staff, and they overbook ALL THE TIME. The doctor doesn’t even fully look at your pet. My dog is old and we understand that she has a heart condition, but he gave us ZERO options. He basically told us that she was going to die soon anyways. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere where they actually care about your pet, and not just running through appointments as quickly as possible.
