How to Save Money at Companion Animal Specialty & Emergency Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Highly disappointed in the quality of service here. We waited 2+ hours for my dog to be seen with a swollen leg and an infection at the bottom of her foot. After patiently waiting for 2 hours, we asked what the expected time was to be seen AND THEY TOLD US ANOTHER HOUR!!!!! They rudely explained that other pets came in who were “higher priority”, even though my dog walked in limping and in pain. I suggest you go to UrgentVet, they were able to take my dog immediately. Plus, one of the ladies approached my dog trying to pet the top of her head, which people should know that you don’t approach a strangers dog trying to touch the top of their head, especially someone who works in a clinic. Overall waste of 2 hours. There are more worthwhile clinics nearby!

We brought our beloved Buddy here last night as he was in his final moments from old age. Sadly, he passed away in the car just as we arrived. The staff were incredibly compassionate; they still welcomed us in, gently took him, wrapped him in a blanket, and gave us the time and space we needed to say our goodbyes. Their kindness and empathy in such a difficult moment meant so much to us. We have two other dogs, and after this experience, I feel completely comfortable bringing either of them here for any emergency. The care, respect, and understanding shown by everyone here truly sets this place apart.

We called and talked to Katie because our Newfoundland had developed raw spots on his neck, she was very generous with her time and answered all of our questions. After consulting with other staff she said that an emergency visit was not necessary and we could take him to his scheduled vet visit. This is a level of service and integrity that is rare to find these days and we appreciate Katie and the rest of the staff!!!

Our cat was rushed in after going into shock from having a bad reaction. She was in critical condition but the doctors literally saved her life. She also had underlying issues that the doctors treated, and now my 15 year old cat seems very energetic and happy. After spending 2 days at this hospital, she came out acting better than she’s been in months. I want to thank Dr. Hochman and Dr. Miller for doing such a good job. They took such great care of our cat and they were very professional, well spoken, and down to earth when speaking with us. The techs also took great care of her day and night as well. The first two pictures are of our cat while she was there, and the third picture is her once she came home. Great job and thank you!

On Sunday my 15yo dog was vomiting and couldn't stand and wasn't eating. Carried him in, after checking in we were directed to have a seat. Within a few minutes we were taken to an exam room where they took his vitals. Then directed to sit in the waiting room to be called. 2.5 hours later we left without seeing anyone else. Went to our regular vet on Monday and he was in kidney failure. Treatments were to no avail, he was put to sleep on Tuesday morning. Thanks for letting my dog suffer longer than he should have. Would never take a pet there again.
