How to Save Money at Your Pets Wellness (Bucktown), A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I really appreciate the staff here. My dog is a new patient here, but I’ve had to bring him in for several things in the last few months. Dr Tina has been incredible. She always promptly calls with results and has spent 15-20 minutes on the phone with me multiple times, going over findings and next steps and answering all my questions. She also went above and beyond last week after I left the clinic. She did some research to find a lower cost test option after doing a blood draw on my pup, which resulted in the office refunding me some of what I had paid earlier that afternoon. Unexpected vet bills SUCK and it’s really great to know the team here is understanding of that and wants to help. Also shout out to Jolene for being the sweetest ever, and the rest of the front office/techs for their patience dealing with me and my very whiny Roscoe.

Our cat Taco was rescued when he was about 2/3. He's going on 8/9 now. December 2021 we noticed Taco wasn't eating as much and he rapidly lost weight, was making strange sounds. We took him to our vet in Dallas and they put him on steroids. Basically said there was nothing else they could do. He started limping and when we took him in they said nothing was wrong. On the high dose of steroids Taco was still cuddly, he ate better.. but he just wasn't the same. His fur was thin and shedding heavily, he was sleepier than normal, spurts of energy were very quick and infrequent. We moved to Chicago December 2022 and brought him in March 2023 to establish a new vet and get a refill on his medication. We saw Dr. Dory. I sent over our records for him prior and as soon as I walked in she had questions for me. After leaving his first exam she had a plan, gave me educational pieces to look over and told me to reach out with any questions regarding her recommendations. Taco apparently was suffering from tooth reabsorption. We got a second opinion before moving forward with surgery. We decided it was worth a try and his surgery was May 23rd. We saw almost immediate improvement after a week of healing. She also noticed inflammation in his paws, which was causing the limp. After a round of antibiotics the limp has not come back. A few weeks later we saw a bit of decline again and brought him back. She spent 45 minutes with us going over his behavior, asking questions, watching videos with us. She easily could have ordered x rays, we would not have been surprised or objected at all. But she decided to put him back on a very low dose of steroids.. way lower than he's ever been on. The little guy seems to just be a ball of inflammation. It's been a few weeks since our last visit and Taco is so healthy. We cannot believe how much better he is. He's playing again, his fur is thick again, he's gained weight. He's a completely different cat. We cannot thank Dr. Dory enough for helping this boy actually feel better. Everyone in the office has been so kind. They've always done their best to get us in as soon as we needed and have answered all our questions. I highly recommend this team. Definitely note they book up fast, they aren't a big team.. and it's not an emergency clinic, but they do their absolute best to get your baby in as soon as possible.

I have three animals who have been patients here since we moved to Chicago 13 years ago. The practice is expensive and they can be a bit pushy about supplements, but you if you don’t mind saying “no, thank you” regularly, that’s not that big of a deal. Our original vet is gone, and many techs and vets have come and gone since, but we’ve kept going for continuity. Our cat, Thor, according to a technician, was upset during his senior panel blood draw at his last appointment in March, and the practice asked us to give him gabapentin before his next blood draw. This felt like a bit overkill, as he’d gotten his blood drawn there over a dozen times, but we were fine with it. I figured it was just a new tech who struggled drawing blood. Today, we made an appointment for the vet to see him because he’d become constipated and wasn’t responding to stool softener. About an hour before the appointment, I received a voicemail that we needed to give Thor gabapentin before today’s appointment. I called back about ten minutes later and asked to confirm that we needed to sedate him for a regular visit. I was told that because we hadn’t given him the gabapentin already, that it was too late and they were cancelling his appointment. I pointed out that the effect of the drug wouldn’t be much different ten minutes later. My wife called back to talk to the vet, who confirmed that they could’ve seen him had we given him the sedative at 12:30pm, but not 12:40pm. It’s pretty disappointing to take your pets to a clinic for almost 15 years, and then, when one of them is in distress, to have the appointment cancelled because a technician thought your cat was too stressed out.

Thankfully my Dog is healthy and doesn't get into trouble, we only have to go to a Vet annually. Living in Logan Square, I found YPW in Bucktown due to good reviews and proximity and for the most part they have been OK for the last two years doing just annual check-ups. Prices, however, have seemed to have gotten worse (especially post acquisition by Thrive Pet, a big corporate entity). When they were already borderline ridiculous. I got an estimate for a dental CLEANING (no extractions etc just for a CLEANING) on a whim last Summer, and the invoice was to a tune of nearly $1700. How does a dental cleaning for an animal cost more then a Human even without insurance? I drove back to my hometown without hesitating and went to my old Vet who did the same service for $300, WITHOUT an itemized bill like YPW had fabbed up. Seriously, they nickel and dime you down to the amount of NAPKINS they would need during surgery. They also so graciously offered a 5% discount if the invoice was paid 24 hours upon receipt 😂. I've also noticed that most Dr's on staff were transplants of the VCA, take that for what you will. Going to my annual visit last week, I paid over $400 for 2x Vaccines, a Wellness Check, stool analysis, anal gland relief, and a heartworm test. My last straw was them offering to throw away a poop bag I was holding onto in the lobby and finding out they charged me a $6 disposal fee. YPW will never get another cent from me.

I am so disappointed by my care from Dr. Khrystyna Vaziri and I do not recommend you see her or bring your pet here. I brought my cat in for an annual check up. After one tiny swat, the doctor refused to examine her yet still charged me for the appointment. How are you a vet and can't handle a measly cat swat? Like get gloves and get over it. Any cat is gonna be on edge at the vet! She also prescribed a bunch of medicine with little to no explanation. How do you prescribe medicine without even physically examining? I left with frustration and none of my questions answered and feeling more lost then i started. Do NOT bring your pet here. I will be taking my business elsewhere where I know they'll treat my cat with kindness, love, and quality care.
