How to Save Money at VSx Veterinary Surgery of Chicago

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Veterinary Surgery of Chicago was recommended to me by our primary vets at Duke Animal Hospital for my dog Frankie’s TPLO surgery in February. I stopped in to check out the place before scheduling a consult, and I was greeted by Liz and had all of my questions answered. At the consult, Dr Wosar was very thorough in his assessment of my dog’s injury, as well as going through the other options and potential paths for me to take with Frankie. They updated me when she was waking up from anesthesia and sent home detailed instructions to follow in the first couple weeks. I am so pleased with how everything went, and now 3 months later Frankie is back to zooming around the yard and going on hour long walks. They responded very promptly to any calls or emails, and they were able to send over her new procedure records to our primary vet right away. Her incision (now scar) is healthy. Frankie loved all of the staff and I cannot recommend them enough to anyone who has a dog needing surgery :)

We had an excellent experience at Veterinary Surgery of Chicago with Dr. Rebecca Ball and her team. My cat was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma, and we went through a full treatment process at this clinic — including a CT scan and surgery. Although Dr. Ball initially explained that the CT might not give us clear results, I still wanted to proceed, and I appreciated that she supported my decision. Based on the scan, she performed surgery to remove the tumor, and even my local vet said it would be very difficult to achieve clean margins — but Dr. Ball did an incredible job. The biopsy confirmed that the tumor was completely removed, and we were told this level of clean margins is quite rare in cases like ours. The healing process went very smoothly. The incision closed up beautifully with dissolvable stitches, so we didn’t need a second visit for suture removal. The clinic also sent us home with everything we needed for post-op care. One of the things I appreciated most was their transparent pricing policy — after the initial consultation, they provided both a lower and upper estimate range, and the final bill stayed within that range. Everything was very clear and professional. I also want to highlight how well the clinic coordinated communication — they sent all necessary records to the oncology center, to my local vet, and to me as well. As someone whose first language is not English, I’m especially grateful that they were willing to communicate via email in addition to phone calls. It made everything much easier for me to understand and manage. While it’s possible that my cat may still need additional treatment in the future, since this type of cancer can return or spread, I truly feel that Dr. Ball did everything possible from a surgical standpoint to give us the best chance. I sincerely hope we won’t need more treatment — but I’m very thankful for how far we’ve come already. Dr. Ball and the entire staff were kind, professional, and patient throughout the whole process. The clinic itself is beautiful — clean, modern, and welcoming. I’m very thankful for the care they gave my cat, and I highly recommend this clinic to anyone needing specialized veterinary surgery.

Dr. Wosar did two TPLOs on our dog Lady and we cannot recommend him enough! His knowledge and expertise was so impressive. Her recovery went smoother than we could have imagined. She had her right TPLO 12/18/2024 and left TPLO 3/18/2025. She is now stronger than ever, completely healed and her active self again! The vet techs and Liz are INCREDIBLE too! We're happy we are all done but we will miss seeing them. So grateful for this entire team! Lady says thank you!

My pup Archie was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor and had two other growths that were also of potential concern. Our vet recommended VSx and Dr. Wosar and at that first consult I knew we were in the right place. We knew we had to have the mast cell tumor removed but there were various ways to approach the other growths, each with different risks and costs. With Dr. Wosar's guidance we made a decision for our approach that seemed medically sound, pragmatic with regards to Archie's risk and experience, and cost effective (because even though we have insurance, they never cover everything). Not only did I feel very comfortable with our decision for how to proceed, but every staff member who interacted with Archie was very kind and patient with my fearful pittie. It helped me know that he was comfortable and loved, even during this scary time when I couldn't be with him. The surgery went smoothly and we got the best outcomes possible from the biopsies as well! I'm so thankful to Dr. Wosar, Liz, Cos, and Megan for taking such great care of Archie!

Veterinary Surgery of Chicago is awesome!!! From consult to discharge after surgery everything was excellent. The team kept me updated on surgery day with text messages, Dr. Wosar called after my boy’s surgery was done and told my how it went. The discharge instructions were very clear and concise. I greatly appreciated how much care and compassion every member of the team had with my guy. I would not hesitate to come back for any future surgeries.
