How to Save Money at VCA Lake Shore Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
VCA went above and beyond and did the seemingly impossible. With two days to go before an international flight our cats were missing EU health certificates which are required for EU layovers even if the final destination is not in the EU. Dr Ali and Veronica rushed to submit the forms to the USDA and got them approved on time and the forms returned stamped. Sam was also a huge help in getting us the support on time. VCA saved us thousands of dollars and we could not be more grateful. Trust this place to help you!

Extremely disappointing experience overall. One of the vets we saw genuinely seemed afraid of dogs and conducted the “check-up” in a rushed, uneasy manner, which is not something you want when trusting someone with your pet’s care. On top of that, both the techs and vets consistently push additional procedures and treatments at every visit, quickly turning routine appointments into bills in the hundreds of dollars. What makes this worse is that once you’ve paid, they offer zero support with insurance claims. They won’t help submit anything, won’t restate or document what they recommended, and won’t even clarify details needed to justify the procedures to insurance. This feels far more like a profit-maximizing operation than a clinic focused on animal care or supporting pet owners. Once your card is charged, you’re on your own. I strongly recommend going to a local vet who actually cares about your pet and is willing to advocate for you as an owner. This place is a joke.

Every time my sensitive French bulldog has an issue and I call around and get an appointment for my pet, I find the care and cost not as exceptional to VCA Lakeshore. So from now on the answer is clear. They will be my primary vet and here’s why. I can always get an appointment in a reasonable time frame. Their staff has always been accommodating. Price point has never been insanely outrageous. But most importantly the care we receive has always resolved my pets issue. I can’t say enough about my veterinarian. Thank you!

I had a very positive PAWs wellness checkup here. The appointment lasted about 45 minutes, with some waiting time in our room with our cat. Everyone was very friendly, they got us situated in our room very quickly, and took care of our Milly, giving us some home care advice/tools to help clean her ears. I can see a lot of people have had negative experiences with their wellness checkup up, but to me it was a really great *free* experience !! I’d also recommend going at off peak times like 5:30.

This place is terrible and they discriminate against pets being brought in from rescue shelters. I was promised an appointment that was later rescheduled due to the Dr. not wanting to see my pet and having “paid” patient appointments rather than the “shelter pets who have free courtesy exams” this place is horrible. How could you discriminate against a pet that’s being rescued and saved. Everyone at the facility should be ashamed of themselves and I will be pushing this further. Everyone including the receptionist needs to be investigated, the Dr. is WRONG for discriminating against a pet that’s been saved due to having “paid” visits. As a veterinarian, how could you? I wish I could provide this place with zero stars. I will be escalating this further.
