How to Save Money at Premier Veterinary Group - Chicago

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Unfortunately, my dog did not have a happy outcome. She presented with a splenic mass and multiple other tumors, and her condition was critical upon arrival. Despite this, I am incredibly grateful for the professionalism, urgency, and compassion shown to us during such a heartbreaking situation. The veterinarians and staff performed an ultrasound immediately, and surgery was initiated within about an hour of our arrival—an impressive feat, especially for an emergency hospital on a holiday. I was kept informed every step of the way, and everyone we encountered was kind, empathetic, and supportive right through the end. While I hope I never need emergency care again, I have complete faith in this team if I do. Special thanks to Angela, who helped me set up the appointment and was compassionate and helpful during an incredibly difficult time.

I’m really glad I found Premier clinic and especially cardiologist Dr.Brennan for my cat. In other clinic’s emergency she was misdiagnosed, they scared us and told us without a heart ultrasound that she didn't have long to live. But when Dr.Brennan examined her heart and said that the heart disease was in the very early stages and that her life was not in danger for now. He prescribed heart medications and observation for the next six months. I left your clinic with such relief. And the doctor is always in touch by email. I adore this clinic for my cat and my peace of mind🙏🏻

Your beloved pet will be in the most wonderful and caring hands at Premier Vet Group! My dog has been here twice within three months: once for a tumor removal (thank you Dr. Jankovits for saving her life!) and another for an emergency overnight admission. Both visits we were met with the most friendly and extremely informative staff, who were more than willing and happy to answer my never-ending list of questions, ease my worries, transparent on costs, and provided clear communication while she was admitted. Each time she was left at the facility I felt relieved knowing she was in loving care. This is the only emergency vet I will go to and trust. Thank you Premier Vet team for all you do for our furry family members! You are greatly appreciated.

Anxious and over protective dog dad here who felt the entire experience was caring, thoughtful with all the attention I might expect. I was seeing a specialist as a referral from my own vet but she was highly recommended and they were right. From the first intake call to the face time with the vet, I felt my dog was in good hands.

Excellent veterinary emergency/specialty hospital. Wonderful staff , friendly, professional, caring and highly competent. Dr. Venhuizen was outstanding. He was very calm, articulate and patient in explaining his treatment plan and various scenarios for our 14 yr old terrier who suffered cluster seizures on New Year’s Day. She had never had a seizure before and we were very fortunate to get her to this wonderful hospital where she received excellent , compassionate treatment and care from the staff. We elected to leave her at the hospital overnight for observation because we knew she was in good hands and it was the best for her. Start to finish the communication was really exceptional with Dr. Venhuizen following up with us throughout the evening to update us on her condition. This was very reassuring, as we were very anxious about her.The next morning, Dr Kaplan contacted us to provide a clear and detailed summary of our dog’s condition, treatment and prognosis as well as next steps. Dr. Kaplan listened very patiently and answered my questions very clearly and which helped us better prepare for the recovery days ahead. The hospital also made sure all the details of the event and treatment were formally documented in a report shared with our veterinarian’s office. When we came to pick up our dog he next day , a veterinary technician carefully explained the details for administering medications and how to care for our sweet girl. I would not hesitate to call on Premier Veterinary Hospital for a pet emergency. They are top notch professionals!
